Split Fiction's reputation has been dented? By what? The general consensus has been (and I agree) that it's a great game. Story's never been Fares's strong point, and that doesn't change here, but as an experience it's a magical, often brilliantly designed thing.

In Reply To @SonicSP Absolutely. I appreciate the article's perspective, but I don't necessarily agree with it being dark or near horror. It's a perfect mother's day film, because it depicts motherhood in all of its aspects, not just the happy bits - and to be clear, there are happy bits, serene bits, quiet bits, and beyond. One of the most wonderful moments I've experienced in cinema occurs in the scene with the kids in the snow, buoyed by Masakatsu Takagi's score into pure joy.

And because of that, when the deeper moments hit, from the responsibilities of being a single parent, to the ending that's one of the most bittersweet depictions of what motherhood is, it's not a joke at all. It's a perfect film for people like me, who took our mothers for granted for most of our lives. It's a reminder to cherish the relationship, because one day, one of you won't be around any more.

When I first saw this film, it was with a friend. At the end, she turned to me and said that this animated cartoon had more soul in it than most movies she'd ever seen.

I don't think there's a better recommendation I could ever give than that.
