In Reply To @polygon_user_m5fig1af I know it's a well loved game, but the insane price per figure makes it hard to recommend to me. At the very least it needs a starter set at a much lower price point, but I could never be tempted to bite when a box of four minis + cards hits close to £60 price point. It takes a lot to make GW pricing look good.

I'd be hesitant to recommend Star Wars: Shatter point. Atomic Mass have more or less dropped support for Star Wars Legion and X-Wing to push it hard to little success, and their track record suggests a short lifespan. They're not the most trustworthy company right now.


I'd offer a couple of recommendations myself:Mordheim is still going strong, unsupported by GW, which has been to it's benefit. It's effectively miniature agnostic, so long as minis fit the theme, and there's a huge range of options out there to pick or kitbash from, whether it be GW minis (the old mercenaries kit is returning to the Old World range in January too), 3d prints or some of the Excellent modular kits from ranges like Frostgrave and Oathmark. It now has rules for huge numbers of warbands and campaign settings available for free at Broheim.net, and a more active community than many games listed here despite its age.


I'd also recommend Warcry over Kill team. It's games workshops only award winning ruleset, had some of their best miniatures, and should be due a brand new starter set sometime this year. It's theoretically to AoS what Kill team is to 40k.

It's worth noting that LoTR: SBG isn't typical GW fare like 40k but more of an old school wargame. It doesn't care about balance and even forces and focuses on recreating specific (fictional) battles. In this regard, the set seems to focus on a battle said character wasn't present for.

On the other hand, they sure do like making money from character models. It's more a greed issue than a representation one.

In Reply To @Tristan.Irwin There's nothing restricting your pallet. I kitbashed some ww2 minis with some conquistadors and painted them with really vivid Spanish inquisition crimsons offsetting the drab camo. It's not the most practical of schemes in a don't shoot at me sort of way but who cares, have fun. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

In Reply To @Odinsatanas He's better at finishing books than Martin. That's all. He's prolific. When he writes characters and dialogue at the standard of Martin, or even Abercrombie for that matter, we'll talk.

In Reply To @randobobando His dialogue leaves me really cold and uninterested. His characters don't talk like real people. It makes it all feel unnatural and contrived to me. I will say Stormlight Archives was a step up from previous work.
