She cold-emailed Sephora with no finished product. They said yes. Tisha Thompson had no venture capital, no connections in beauty retail, and no completed product when she decided to pitch the biggest beauty retailer in the world. What she had was a vision for clean beauty that didn't exist on Sephora's shelves, and the nerve to send the email anyway. LYS Beauty became the first Black-owned clean beauty brand at @Sephora. She turned a $500,000 bet into a $10 million company without raising a single round of venture funding. The part most founders miss: she didn't wait until everything was perfect. She pitched before the product was done, locked in the distribution partner first, then built backward from there. That's not reckless. That's strategic. Too many founders spend years perfecting something nobody asked for. Thompson proved that conviction and a cold email can open doors that a polished deck and warm intros never will. 50 million people are about to tune into one live stream. On March 21, Netflix will broadcast BTS's full-group comeback from Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul to every subscriber on the planet. No special ticket. No paywall. Just press play. Think about that for a second. Seven artists who haven't performed together in nearly four years, a 600-year-old folk song as the album title, and a historic palace as the stage. That's not a concert. That's a cultural event disguised as a content play. What makes this worth paying attention to, even if K-pop isn't your thing: Netflix is betting big on live events again. After the bumpy Jake Paul fight stream in 2024, they're going back to the well with arguably the biggest live audience in music. The infrastructure test alone is worth watching. BTS named their comeback album "ARIRANG" after Korea's unofficial national anthem. A song about separation and reunion, released the week all seven members finish military service. That's brand storytelling most marketing teams could only dream of. The ARIRANG World Tour kicks off April 9 with 82 shows across 34 regions. That's not a comeback. That's a global logistics operation generating billions in economic impact. Whether you care about the music or not, BTS is a case study in what happens when cultural authenticity meets global scale. The biggest deals in media aren't just about content libraries. They're playbooks for every founder trying to figure out when to compete and when to collaborate. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merging isn't just a headline for entertainment junkies. It's a masterclass in strategic thinking that applies to businesses at any scale. Three lessons that hit hardest: Scale isn't about ego. It's about leverage. @Warner Bros. Discovery and @Paramount Global figured out that combining audiences gives you negotiating power that neither had alone. The same principle works for a 10-person startup partnering with a complementary brand. Profitability comes from efficiency, not just growth. The merged entity plans to cut redundancies and streamline operations. Too many founders chase top-line revenue while bleeding cash on overlapping tools, redundant hires, and vanity projects. The best competitors know when to stop competing. HBO Max and Paramount+ were burning cash trying to out-spend each other. The smarter move was asking: "What if we stopped fighting and started building together?" That last one is the hardest for founders to internalize. Competition feels productive. Collaboration requires trust. But the companies that figure out when to flip that switch tend to win bigger.
