I was recently looking back at CG_1 for Coalesse and realized it was one of the earliest expressions of what would become Happy Minimalism™. On paper, it's a very basic object: four legs and a square top. But simple isn't the same as easy. Everything we cared about had to live in a few very deliberate decisions, particularly the colored insert inside the leg and the choice of aluminum or wood frames. We never called it CG_1 internally. On our servers, to this day, it's the LBT. The Little Black Table. The reference was Coco Chanel: one honest form you could dress up or dress down depending on how it was specified. Change the material and the whole personality changes, while the idea underneath stays exactly the same. That was the discipline. Reduce the form to almost nothing, then put the care into the details and material decisions that give it identity. The difficulty doesn't need to show. More than fifteen years later, it's still in production. Still selling. I've come to think that's the real test. Not whether a minimal object looks good in a photograph, but whether it still earns its place in the line a decade and a half after the context around it has changed. Clarity, it turns out, isn't only a design value. It's a commercial one. Happy Minimalism. Before we called it that. Designed for Coalesse a Steelcase brand.
