Here’s how to get the most value from your next SWOT analysis with your team. Most teams will logically divide their session into four time blocks, each dedicated to one area of SWOT. But your strengths, and even your weaknesses, just aren’t worthy of much discussion. Strengths are widely known and rarely inform new actions. Weaknesses are part of every organization. Touch on them lightly; then, move on. Instead, spend most of your time on Opportunities and Threats. The real value of a SWOT session comes from identifying what could meaningfully change the trajectory of the business—and what might get in the way if you don’t address it. Why pay $5,000 for a business diagnostic when the first step is available free? Many consulting engagements begin with a structured diagnostic. It typically takes several days of interviews, document review and analysis before a meaningful conversation about the business can even begin. Often it’s time you don’t have when you are running a business. That work has value. It is also why those diagnostics often cost several thousand dollars. But before investing that time and money, there is a simpler question. Do you actually know where the leakage points in the business are? Pulse provides an initial diagnostic across eleven core areas of business performance, grouped under three themes: Engagement, Delivery and Resilience. It takes about twenty minutes and produces an immediate view of where potential issues or gaps may sit. It does not replace a full diagnostic. What it does provide is the initial overview that consultants normally spend three to five days establishing before a meaningful discussion can occur.
