As a CFO, I’ve participated in board meetings that meaningfully moved the company forward and others that fell short of their potential. The difference is rarely the quality of the board itself; it’s how management prepares for and uses the meeting. In this article, I outline practical ways leadership teams at venture-backed companies can turn board meetings into a real operating advantage accelerating decision making, sharpening strategic alignment, and elevating the overall board experience.
Board reporting isn’t just a requirement of venture-backed growth: it’s one of the most powerful tools founders have to drive alignment and better decision-making. In his latest CFO piece, Mike Batesole, CPA, CMA explains how board reports can evolve from tactical updates into a strategic leadership exercise. He outlines what effective board reporting looks like at each growth stage and how intentional structure leads to more focused discussions, clearer priorities, and stronger outcomes. 1moMike Batesole, CPA, CMA This is really well said. The framing around creating conditions for clearer thinking especially resonates. I saw you do this consistently when we worked together. One thing I’d add is that clarity breaks down fast if people aren’t actually talking about the same thing. Even strong reporting can lead to parallel conversations when shared definitions aren’t explicit. I’ve seen smart rooms stall because no one aligned on what a term really meant or what was included versus assumed. Structure helps people organize information. Shared meaning is what allows discussions to move forward without silent misalignments creeping in.
