The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is quietly becoming the standard API for AI-driven checkout. No browser. No button. No human in the loop. That breaks most payment architectures built today. Your checkout was designed for a person clicking through a UI. An AI agent doesn’t click. It sends a structured intent, expects a tokenized session back, and completes the transaction, all through an API your system probably doesn’t expose yet. Open Agentic Commerce > Checkout in ChatGPT Everyone is excited about agentic checkout. It’s useful but it’s incremental. The bigger shift is structural: we’re moving from walled agentic commerce to open agentic commerce. In the ’90s, we had two internets: • Curated bundles (AOL-style) • Open protocols (HTTP/DNS/HTML) The curated model looked stronger at first. Open protocols won and created the modern digital economy. We’re at that same fork again. From 1997–2024, the web’s contract was: human attention → ads → publisher revenue. Agents break that model. They don’t click ads. They execute tasks. So “checkout inside one assistant” is an AOL moment: better UX, still a gate. Open protocols are the Mosaic moment: • any agent can pay • any merchant can verify payment • no whitelist, no gatekeeper BD loop If this scales, it won’t just improve conversion.
