- [Narrator] As you and your company work to do your part to address climate change, you'll need to avoid greenwashing. But what is greenwashing? My definition is greenwashing or green sheen is an attempt to capitalize on the rise of a socially responsible means of doing business by giving a false impression that a company is environmentally conscious. Greenwashing is a play on the term whitewashing which means using false information to hide a wrongdoing, an error, or a negative practice. The term greenwashing originated in the 1960s when the hotel industry asked guests to reuse their towels to save the environment when in actual fact the purpose of the initiative was to lower their own laundry costs. More recently, attention has turned to the biggest carbon emitters such as the energy companies whose profits are made from fossil fuels.
