- When emotional intelligence came to popular attention, 25 years ago, I was a new manager and it helped me understand my style of leadership and how to build stronger teams. Emotional intelligence is similar to intellectual intelligence but it's an indication of our ability to be aware of and control our own emotion as well as read and respond to those around us in empathetic, positive ways. Research shows that certain aspects of emotional intelligence within individuals are clearly linked to teams that feel more supported and engaged. As a manager, you need to be aware of the elements of emotional intelligence and how they can make you a better leader. The first element is self-awareness. The more you understand about yourself, the better you can understand what you bring to the leadership relationship. You should be taking assessments, journaling, working with a mentor.
