Under the general supervision of the Infrastructure Manager and working closely with the Network Administrator, the Network Technician assists with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the county’s network and communications systems. This position supports the operation of network infrastructure including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, and cable systems. The role focuses on maintaining reliable connectivity, assisting with network deployments, and responding to network-related issues across county facilities.
Examples of Duties
Assist with installation, configuration, and maintenance of network infrastructure including switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.
Monitor and troubleshoot network connectivity issues involving LAN, WAN, and wireless networks.
Provide Tier 1/2 support for network-related service requests and incidents.
Assist with deployment and replacement of network hardware including switches, access points, and related equipment.
Perform physical network work including patching, cabling, fiber terminations, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
Support configuration and troubleshooting of network technologies such as VLANs, QoS, and basic switching and routing.
Assist with maintaining accurate documentation of network infrastructure including diagrams, equipment inventory, and configuration records.
Participate in routine maintenance tasks including firmware updates, hardware replacements, and network equipment testing.
Assist with maintaining network asset inventory and tracking equipment lifecycle.
Work with the Network Administrator to diagnose and resolve network performance or connectivity issues.
Performs related duties as required.
Requires travel between buildings and will require occasional evenings or weekends.
Must be available for rotating on-call schedule.
Typical Qualifications
Associate degree in Networking, Information Technology, or related field with at least one (1) year of networking or IT infrastructure experience; or three (3) years of relevant networking or IT infrastructure experience.
Basic understanding of networking concepts including Ethernet, TCP/IP, VLANs, and wireless networking.
Experience troubleshooting network connectivity and physical network infrastructure.
Familiarity with cloud-managed networking platforms such as Aruba Central, Extreme Cloud IQ, Arista Threat Management, Cisco Meraki, or similar systems is a plus.
Understanding of copper and fiber cabling standards and related physical networking technologies.
Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and be able to pass an FBI / CJIS fingerprint and background check.
Industry certifications such as CCNA, Network+, or equivalent are desirable.
Experience with network hardware vendors such as Aruba, Extreme, Palo Alto, or similar platforms is a plus.
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Information Technology Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Network Technician. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of computer technology and maintenance, information systems management, data processing, etc. Has working knowledge of varying business operations and is able to design / implement computer applications to meet business needs. Can effectively determine appropriate hardware and software requirements for various County operations. Can provide professional, efficient user support and assistance. Has knowledge of the standard tools, materials, and practices of the industry. Is skilled in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Can make minor adjustments and repairs to computer hardware as needed. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Can offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Can take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Can plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical, and human relations skills. Can learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Can read and interpret technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Can assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear, and effective manner. Has thorough knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department. Has knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
