Role Description:

This is a full-time, on-site role based in the San Diego Metropolitan Area for a Mechanical Engineer. Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Design complex electro-mechanical, optical, and laser systems
  • Assemble and test prototypes to ensure functional design and manufacturing goals are achieved
  • Create documentation such as technical drawings, Bills of Material (BOMs), Work Instructions, plumbing schematics, and other documentation to support downstream manufacturing processes
  • Implement Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to precision mechanical components and assemblies
  • Follow revision control, design publication, technical documentation, and part numbering processes and suggest/implement process updates as needed
  • Provide technical guidance to manufacturing team to address manufacturing and production issues
  • Suggest and implement engineering changes per Engineering Change Request (ECR) process
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure technical and Design for Manufacturing (DfM) goals are achieved
  • Use 3D printers to build prototypes to test assembly fitup
  • Communicate status on projects to Mechanical team lead
  • Interface with vendors to receive new component technical information, prices, and availability

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field of study
  • 5+ years experience designing machine tools and/or industrial machinery
  • 5+ years experience using SolidWorks in an industrial setting - 5 years or more
  • Experience interfacing with suppliers including machine shops and fabricators
  • Experience technical writing of work instructions, manuals, and other technical documentation
  • Apply manufacturing process knowledge to design parts for efficient manufacturing
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, build and test new designs efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to assemble, align and calibrate electro-mechanical and systems
  • Understanding of clean-room principles, especially as it applies to optical system assembly
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with teammates, vendors and customers
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, and Outlook (email)
  • Proficient user of Windows PCs
  • Previous experience in metal additive manufacturing or advanced manufacturing technologies
