Mainframe Modernization Architect

About the Role

Our client is seeking a senior Mainframe Modernization Architect to support a large-scale legacy transformation initiative. This role will focus on helping move core applications and supporting services from traditional mainframe environments into a modern cloud-aligned architecture while maintaining performance, stability, and operational continuity.

This is a hands-on architecture role for someone who brings deep experience across mainframe technologies, distributed runtime environments, Linux administration, and modernization tooling. The right person will help shape the target environment, support migration activities, troubleshoot platform issues, and improve the development-to-production lifecycle.

What You’ll Tackle

* Lead architecture and technical support efforts for mainframe modernization initiatives

* Install, configure, and support enterprise modernization tooling in Linux environments

* Help migrate workloads from mainframe-based platforms into cloud-based target environments

* Tune servers for performance, sizing, and operational stability

* Support development teams using enterprise modernization platforms and tools

* Manage code progression through development, QA, and production environments

* Implement and support batch job interfaces and scheduler integrations

* Troubleshoot environmental, platform, and runtime issues across multiple systems

* Coordinate with vendors to resolve platform issues and implement updates

* Support SSL certificate implementation, file management, and environment hardening

What You Bring

* 10+ years of IT experience with strong application modernization background

* 5+ years of experience with Rocket Software or Micro Focus technologies

* Deep experience with enterprise modernization server and developer tooling

* Strong Linux administration experience, ideally in SUSE environments

* Experience supporting migrations from mainframe to cloud environments

* Knowledge of cloud operations, ideally within GCP

* Strong understanding of IBM mainframe technologies including COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and flat files

* Experience with CICS and IMS environment setup

* Experience with batch processing integrations and schedulers such as Control-M

* Experience with shell scripting, SSL certificates, and system troubleshooting

* Ability to resolve complex environmental and platform issues in distributed environments

* Strong communication skills and ability to work across architecture, development, and operations teams

Nice to Have

* Prior experience with large-scale enterprise modernization programs

* Deeper GCP migration experience

* Experience with vendor management and support escalations

* Familiarity with XA resources and transactional environments

* Experience mentoring teams during modernization transitions
