Assistant Vice President @ Robert Half | Permanent Placement Finance & Accounting
The Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of indirect tax compliance, planning, and strategy, including sales & use tax, property tax, and other transaction-based taxes. This role partners cross-functionally with finance, operations, and IT to ensure compliance, improve processes, and optimize tax efficiency across multiple jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
Compliance & Reporting
Manage U.S. indirect tax compliance (sales/use, property, gross receipts, excise taxes) across multiple jurisdictions
Ensure timely and accurate filing of returns and payments
Maintain tax calendars and compliance processes
Oversee tax account reconciliations and documentation for audits
Audit & Risk Management
Lead state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiations
Monitor tax notices and resolve disputes with taxing authorities
Assess tax risks and implement controls to mitigate exposure
Tax Planning & Strategy
Identify tax savings opportunities and process improvements
Provide technical guidance on tax implications of business transactions
Support M&A due diligence and integration from an indirect tax perspective
Process Improvement & Automation
Drive tax technology and automation initiatives (e.g., Vertex, SAP integrations)
Partner with IT and finance teams to improve data accuracy and reporting efficiency
Develop and enhance internal controls (SOX compliance where applicable)
Leadership & Business Partnering
Manage and develop indirect tax staff or external advisors
Provide training to internal stakeholders on tax impacts
Collaborate with accounting, legal, supply chain, and operations teams
Act as a trusted advisor to leadership on tax matters
Regulatory Monitoring
Track changes in state and local tax laws and assess business impact
Communicate updates and ensure timely implementation of changes
Qualifications:
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
CPA, MST, or CMI preferred
Experience
5–10+ years of indirect tax experience (public accounting or industry)
Strong knowledge of sales & use tax and multi-state compliance
Experience with audits, tax research, and tax technology tools
Prior people leadership or project leadership experience preferred
Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) and tax engines (Vertex, OneSource)
Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
