William Rubio liked thisWilliam Rubio liked thisThe last time I wrote a post like this was August 5, 2014 - my final day after sixteen years at Nuance. A lot has happened since. I had two quick turns: SPS Commerce – a great company, but not a great fit for me, and another un-named company that's probably better left that way. I learned important lessons from those brief stints. Ask hard questions before you say yes. Know what you can contribute. Know what you need in return. Know your non-negotiables. Culture matters more than almost anything. After that, Five9. I joined in October 2016 as an individual contributor, intent on retooling my sales skills for the SaaS era. The first year was hard. But with grit, grind, and a little luck I landed my first deal; ZeroRez. Thank you Scott Oremland! After that, Direct Benefits, thank you Dave Bortnem, Red Wing Shoes, thank you Tiffani Harding, Medtronic, thank you Steve S. Brown and countless others. The momentum only picked up from there. In 2020, I was asked to lead a team selling in the mid-market space. Who knew that only three months later the world would change as we know it? How we worked changed, and how we engaged with customers changed. The chaos of Covid only threw fuel on the fire. Only a year later, I was asked to lead the Midwest team as RVP, and then in 2022, the West Enterprise team. None of it would have happened without Doug Dopita. I can’t thank him enough for the trust he placed in me. I owe him so much for the success I’ve had during my time at Five9. He’s truly one of the best among us. It hasn’t all been sunshine. The Covid-boom faded, and the market shifted. New AI players emerged and evolved. Tough times led to tough decisions, and Five9 retrenched in August of 2024. I was asked to lead a leaner US Enterprise team and rebuild. New strategies. New skill sets. New resilience. Today, Five9 generates more than $1.1B in revenue. In 2016, it was $162M. Only ~160 publicly traded SaaS companies ever reach the $1B milestone. I'm proud to have played a part in that growth. Nine consecutive President's Clubs. Two Circle of Excellence Awards. One President's Award for Leadership were fun too. But nothing will match the thrill of watching the success and growth of my team. Playing a role in the careers of so many amazing people - whether early in their career or just working on their craft to become better - is what I will take away from these last ten years. To my team - Dawn Dreyfus-Epstein Katie Quillen Brett Gilbert Brad LaTour Ridge Foust, MBA Kyle Beaudoin Matt Edmunds - you are all-stars and true professionals. Thank you! Mexico is preparing a major spectrum tender for 2026 aimed at expanding mobile broadband and 5G services by offering key frequency bands — notably the 600 MHz band and others suitable for wireless coverage — under a new auction framework that could link fees to coverage commitments to encourage deployment in underserved areas. This initiative follows the cancellation of the previous IFT-12 5G auction as the old regulator (IFT) is being dissolved and replaced by a new regulatory structure, with spectrum planning and tender timing now overseen by the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) under the Agencia de Transformación Digital y Telecomunicaciones. The changes come amid industry concerns about Mexico’s high spectrum costs — which have previously deterred participation — and broader regulatory shifts seeking to boost competition and network investment in the country’s telecom sector.

As a paid board advisor to a telecom infrastructure company, I was tasked by the Board of Directors to evaluate how the sales and marketing team can effectively measure their success at trade shows. I recommended that we allow the VP of Sales and Marketing to take the lead in planning the event and determining the attendees. Unfortunately, the VP did not fully grasp the importance of measuring return on investment (ROI) related to travel, salaries, hotels, and how these costs relate to net margins. Instead, the focus was placed on gross revenue versus costs or Net Margins, overlooking the critical factor. This experience highlighted a gap in understanding the significance of financial education for sales and marketing teams. It’s essential for CEOs to invest time and resources in educating their sales personnel, especially Directors and VPs, on finance fundamentals to drive better decision-making and ultimately enhance performance. I recognize that I could have done more to support my previous sales teams in this area.

Altice USA Bets on Mobile, Targets 1 Million Customers by 2027 Altice USA is placing a bet on its mobile business, and for good reason. The cable and broadband provider, which operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (#MVNO) on T-Mobile’s network, is aggressively expanding its wireless footprint. During a recent earnings call, Altice USA's CEO Dennis Mathew expressed confidence in the company’s ability to grow, projecting they will reach one million mobile customers by 2027. How MVNOs Drive Growth MVNOs are a crucial part of the telecom ecosystem. Unlike major carriers that build and maintain their own networks, MVNOs lease network capacity from these carriers and offer their own branded services. This allows them to focus on unique service offerings and customer experience without the massive infrastructure costs. For Altice USA, this strategy is paying off. The company added 38,000 new mobile customers in the second quarter, demonstrating consistent growth. Dennis Matthew noted that the company is taking a disciplined approach to customer acquisition, prioritizing “higher-quality acquisitions” and strengthening verification processes. In the second quarter, 57% of new mobile customers ported their phone number, a significant jump from 34% a year ago. Additionally, 31% purchased a device with financing, up from 25% in the same period last year. These strategic improvements are having a direct impact on customer loyalty. Altice USA’s mobile churn—the rate at which customers leave—improved by nearly 600 basis points year-over-year. Altice USA sees its MVNO as a powerful tool for customer retention. By bundling mobile service with its core broadband offerings, the company creates a “stickiness effect.” Customers who have both services are less likely to leave, leading to an improved churn profile. Mobile has also become a critical component of the company’s customer care and retention efforts. According to Dennis Matthew, these channels are now among the largest for mobile sales, yet they still have significant room for growth. While Altice USA continues to navigate challenges in its traditional broadband and video markets, its MVNO is a bright spot. As the company focuses on strategic acquisitions, enhanced customer service, and the power of bundling, its goal of reaching one million mobile customers by 2027 seems well within reach. https://lnkd.in/esrRQJD5

In recent months I’ve spoken and written a lot about reinvigorating the telco voice market, especially using AI, contextual data and smarter capabilities in the cloud and on devices. I’m keynoting about this at the Alianza #Navigate25 event in Salt Lake City next week. So it’s good timing for AT&T to announce its trial of an AI-based call-screening “receptionist”. It uses #GenAI to ask non-whitelist inbound callers about the purpose of their call, and helps determine relevance and value before alerting the human recipient (or not). It’s not the first such call-screening tool - I’ve seen broadly similar examples from BT Group, Swisscom , Telstra, TalkTalk, Charter Communications and others. There are also versions built into #Android and #iOS. There’s value to both in-network and on-device approaches, as well as 3rd party cloud platforms. This sits alongside a wide range of other advanced voice solutions and applications. #AgenticAI can even be set up as a dedicated endpoint on phone networks, allowing a measure of backward compatibility. There’s also a shift from text-to-speech and speech-to-text via LLMs, to live speech-to-speech to reduce latency. That may be a feature of the AT&T offer, based on the phrasing of its blog post. Bridging these advanced voice platforms with #NetworkAPIs, #IoT and #SmartHome systems and vertical solutions for health and social care is also becoming feasible. South Korean operators have had eldercare voice applications for several years, for example. 📡 Rethinking Spectrum Value If spectrum had no value, for example why did Telefónica’s market valuation in Mexico change when it decided to give up its mobile network operations and rely on AT&T’s infrastructure? The answer? Spectrum is not just a regulatory asset — it’s a strategic one. A company with access to high-quality spectrum — bands that offer broader coverage or require less investment to deploy — commands greater investor confidence. And let’s not forget the importance of license duration: a 20-year concession offers far more long-term value than one with only five years remaining. Yet, too often, we reduce spectrum valuation to short-term revenue projections. What gets overlooked? Key factors like coverage obligations, which represent real investments that benefit both operators and society. In many markets, these elements are still not fully integrated into how we price and allocate spectrum — and that’s a problem. Yes, there have been cases of overvaluation — but that doesn’t mean spectrum lacks intrinsic value. On the contrary, there’s huge potential to improve how we understand, assess, and regulate this critical resource. Let’s move beyond the treating spectrum as a commodity.
