Automatic selection of encoding parameters for transmission of media objects
Issued US 7533398
Automatic selection of media encoding parameters based on several parameters, including variable local processing speed, variable transmission link speed and desired time of transmission completion. This was originally developed in support of embedded AP Journalists who needed to transmit video from Iraq using laptops with limited power and slow, unreliable satellite phones.

The MOS Protocol Group

As I joined the AP in 1998 I was tasked to work with industry leaders to create a standard way of integrating broadcast production equipment with modern newsroom computer systems.
At the time no standard existed which could provide near real-time control synchronization of media sequence between a newsroom computer system and other systems such video servers and graphics devices for playback. At the time no standard existed which could provide near real-time control synchronization of media sequence between a newsroom computer system and other systems such video servers and graphics devices for playback. There was also not a standard for including third party preview and edit functionality in newsroom computer systems.
The MOS Protocol Group produced those standards through the generous contribution of people and resources from more than 100 vendors over the first 15 years of the project.
Today, MOS is the defacto open standard for integrating media production and distribution equipment with newsroom computer systems.

From the onset we acknowledged that in order to be successful this effort must provide benefit to the customer, to the vendor partner and to ENPS. In short, the customer needed to receive considerable value and the vendor partner and ENPS needed to make money.
Value was…An outgrowth of fostering the industry open standard MOS Protocol Group was a proprietary effort to foster and support a growing community of vendors and customers wishing to integrated with ENPS via MOS.
From the onset we acknowledged that in order to be successful this effort must provide benefit to the customer, to the vendor partner and to ENPS. In short, the customer needed to receive considerable value and the vendor partner and ENPS needed to make money.
Value was delivered to the customer through the design of an open standard that enabled the functionality the customer needed across a range of vendors, thus also providing the customer choice.
ENPS received synergistic value by integrating well with a large number of vendor partners through a standard protocol, which also reduced development and support costs.
Partners benefited from the synergistic value of working well not only within ENPS but also within other newsroom systems which also supported the open MOS Protocol.
To further add value, ENPS provided a dedicated team of extremely talented integration experts who were assigned to work with individual vendors. These team members provided design, development and testing support and also served as the point of contact for mutual joint marketing efforts.
A product of this effort was the ENPS Integration Guide which served as an industry directory of vendors supporting MOS along with the specific features supported by each.
Key to the long term success of the project was the development of close vendor relationships that allowed both parties to work through technical issues in front of customers in high pressure environments.
I was ultimately responsible for a global team of integration experts based in London, Washington and San Francisco. Customers and Vendors often engaged this group as consultants in the design of new and upgraded systems. -

I was very proud to have been asked by the MOS Protocol Group to accept this award on their behalf.
The award was specifically for, "Development and Standardization of Media Object Server (MOS) Protocol." and ranks among other past Emmys © awarded for the television mixer, color picture tube, Apollo color television from space, video tape, the invention of the ENG truck, NTSC and ATSC standards, and a list of remarkable achievements too long to list. -
