Ambience System update 0.2.1 is a big step forward 🤯 This version adds a dedicated editor tools module inside Unreal Engine, making the workflow much faster and cleaner. Now the system includes: ✅Ambience System Tools window A central place to manage the ambience setup directly from the editor. ✅Level summary Quick view of managers, zones, portals, emitters and profiles used in the current level. ✅Editor validation Run validation before pressing Play and find setup issues earlier. ✅FMOD Distance Preview tools Refresh all 3D emitter distance previews from one place. ✅Selection and issue-finding tools Find and select ambience actors faster in large levels. This update makes the plugin feel much more like a real production tool. The goal is simple: better control, faster setup, fewer mistakes, and a stronger workflow for game audio and level design. When a client asks for character animation, most beginners start keyframing every limb manually. But pros? They rig. In this tutorial, I broke down the process of using Duik Angela—a free tool inside After Effects—to build a custom skeleton and automate complex character movement using Inverse Kinematics (IK). What I covered: • What is Rigging? Creating a skeleton system that lets one body part influence the others—for example, when you move the arm, the hand follows naturally. • Planning the Character: I designed a custom character (“Karubhuddhi Lal Bhaiya in an MJ jacket”), broken into layers—arms, legs, torso, hands, etc.—to prep for rigging. • Setting up Duik Angela: Built a full bone structure using custom joints, linked everything together, and created a fully controllable puppet. • Animating with Ease: Used controllers to animate the dance sequence, with smooth movement and minimal manual keyframing.

💥Enhancing your Rock Shapes is hard in Substance Designer.💥 But this workflow makes it so easy! One of the main reason your stone wall looks off, is because your shapes look flat. This is how you might fix it: 💡 Substrac a Cells pattern to your rocks, then use a flood fill to random grayscale to sculpt them. Finally apply 2 non uniform directional warp with different directions. This will give your rocks the effect of a 3D shape! However this is still a 2D texture. Ran into a weird geometry issue importing a modular mesh from Blender to Unreal Engine 5. It turns out that the Nanite processor changed the triangle structure on import—which completely broke my clean edge and vertex layout. Fix: - Either disable Nanite for the mesh, - Or set Nanite’s fallback target to 100% triangles. If you’re seeing mismatched geometry after import, check your Nanite settings before tearing your mesh apart! A surprising amount of artists tell me they don't use reference or think that using reference is cheating. THAT IS A LIE. How did you learn how to write your ABCs? It probably looked like a worksheet with some dotted lines that you traced over and over again. What was AI modeled after? Your organic brain. And how do you train AI or your own brain to learn a style, or write a script, or draw an anatomically correct character? You need to feed it a lot of reference material. Some of the greatest directors sat in dark rooms watching movies all day and then grabbed bits and pieces of different films to create something new. There are lots of different directors out there with different skillsets. Some of them can board an entire movie themselves. That's not me. So here's a look at how I directed this action scene without being a storyboard artist myself! Hint: I used lots of reference. #behindthescenes #anime #indieanimation

Fal just released a new set of AI models for creating generative materials for Physically Based Rendering: https://lnkd.in/gwJk7q9u (1) A custom Z-Image Turbo model for generating seamless tileable images of textures. (2) Patina, a custom version of FLUX.2 [klein] for PBR material maps estimation. (3) A custom SeedVR2 model for upscaling images while preserving seamless tiling. « We want to give a special shoutout to Ubisoft La Forge. Their CHORD project — Chain of Rendering Decomposition for PBR Material Estimation from Generated Texture Images — directly inspired this work. PBR Texturing  What It Actually Means (And Why It Matters) PBR = Physically-Based Rendering. It’s not a visual style. It’s a material system based on real-world light behavior. Instead of “tuning materials until they look right,” you build them so they behave correctly under any lighting condition. Before PBR (Legacy Workflow) Materials were typically built using: → Diffuse (color) map → Specular map → Gloss map → Scene-tuned reflections → Sometimes baked lighting details This worked well — especially for fixed environments like film frames or game levels. But here’s the operational reality: Change the lighting → materials need tweaks. New HDRI → reflections shift. Move to AR → surface response feels off. Different engine → shader adjustments again. The asset becomes partially lighting-dependent. Not wrong. Just less scalable. PBR Workflow (Modern Standard) With PBR, materials are separated into physically meaningful properties: → Albedo (true base color, no lighting baked in) → Metallic (metal vs non-metal behavior) → Roughness (micro-surface light response) → Normal (surface detail without extra geometry) Now the material follows consistent light rules. Studio lighting. Daylight HDRI. Web configurator. AR preview. Same asset. No shader rebuild. Real Business Impact We built a PBR electric kettle asset for a kitchen appliance brand. They used the same master file for: → Website hero renders → Marketplace packshots → Lifestyle scenes → AR placement previews → Configurator with adjustable lighting No retexturing. No reflection hacks per scene. No “why does it look different here?” issues. One asset. Multiple revenue channels. Why It Matters Marketing → Faster campaign rollout Brand → Consistent product appearance 3D Artists → Predictable cross-platform results Tech Teams → Future-proof asset pipeline PBR isn’t about prettier renders. I keep seeing some puzzling hot-takes from “VR news” outlets about the newly announced Steam Frame. Things like: “Greyscale passthrough is a missed opportunity.” “Resolution isn’t pushing the envelope.” “No OLED? Not next-gen enough.” To me, that misses the bigger picture completely. Valve isn’t just dropping another headset. They’re building out a coherent PC gaming ecosystem that connects Steam Deck, desktop PCs, and now Steam Frame into one continuous experience. A streaming-first, wireless headset that can run VR and traditional games locally on SteamOS/Arm, or stream them from a PC over dedicated 6 GHz, is a strategic move, not a spec sheet stunt. When you look at the design through that lens, some of the “complaints” start to look more like deliberate trade-offs: Greyscale passthrough & camera setup: Four mono cameras plus IR sensors are great for tracking and basic spatial awareness without overcomplicating the hardware or driving up cost and compute. This is a gaming device first, not an MR demo platform. Resolution & panel choice: 2160×2160 per eye with good lenses and a focus on stable, low-latency wireless streaming hits a very sensible sweet spot for PCVR. Chasing “spec flex” for marketing doesn’t help much if it compromises performance, thermals, or price. Streaming-first architecture: Foveated streaming and the dedicated wireless adapter are about making your existing PC and Steam library feel frictionless in VR, not shipping a sealed mobile console with a store on top. One thing I really appreciate: Valve is very explicitly saying the quiet part out loud. The goal is to increase the value of your Steam library and give you “a new way to play your entire Steam library,” not lock you into a walled garden or a vague “metaverse” vision. As a VR game developer, that clarity matters a lot. It means: I can design for PC-class experiences without pretending a mobile SoC is something it isn’t. I’m building for an ecosystem where games are the hero, not avatars, not social graphs, not ad real estate. There’s a strong incentive to create deep, replayable titles that live alongside the rest of someone’s Steam library, not disposable content. That’s exactly the kind of environment I want to ship VR games into. Because of that, our upcoming co-op VR dungeon crawler “Into The Light” is planning to treat Steam Frame as a first-class target platform from day one. We’re designing with PCVR in mind anyway; Valve giving that segment a focused, modern headset is a huge win in my book.

Very useful Houdini feature that often gets overlooked: Detail attributes can be saved into the info block of .bgeo/.geo cache files. That means you can read those values later without loading the full geometry, using File SOP Info Load or gstat. This is great for storing lightweight metadata directly inside caches, not just geometry. For example, you could write per-frame profiler stats, memory usage, node timings, or custom sim metrics into each cache file, then inspect performance across an entire simulation afterward without loading heavy caches. Very small feature, but extremely useful for debugging, profiling your simulations, and understanding performance over time.
