Laura Wiltz liked thisLaura Wiltz liked this"I'm firing her... she's useless, and revenue hasn't moved enough." The exact words a founder said to me for the start of our weekly executive meeting. He was ready to fire his VP of Sales after 63 days. His reason was simple. Revenue had not changed fast enough. So we listed what the VP had done. She met the team (6 reps). Sat with other department leaders (5 of them). Spent days pulling knowledge out of the founder's head. Joined 9 customer dinners. Shadowed sales and success calls. Met existing customers via a virtual "voice of the customer" tour. Built revised hiring plans and capacity models. She was doing the work a new revenue leader should do before pretending she had all the answers. The founder was measuring her against closed revenue before she had enough time to understand the system producing it. That is how companies burn through good leaders. They hire someone to rebuild the revenue motion, then judge them like an experienced rep with a mature territory. Fortunately, after our chat cooler heads prevailed and the founder held off. Six months later, the VP is thriving, and the business was moving in the right direction. Leadership has to create urgency without confusing it with impatience. A new sales leader cannot outrun an old revenue system.

But sitting in a lecture hall or staring at a computer for the next four years wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted to get at it. Learn a skill. Work with his hands. Solve problems. Build a career. As a dad, I’m proud of him. As someone who has spent many years in sourcing and manufacturing, it also got me thinking. We talk a lot about reshoring and rebuilding American manufacturing. But there’s a second part of that conversation we don’t talk about enough: Who’s going to do the work? You can build the factory. Buy the equipment. Move the tooling. But somebody still has to know how to build it, maintain it and keep it running. Aircraft mechanics. Machinists. Electricians. Welders. Maintenance techs. For years, we’ve treated the four-year degree as the default path to success. It isn’t the only one. If we’re serious about strengthening American manufacturing and supply chains, we need to invest in the skilled workforce right alongside the factories. This weekend, I wasn’t just watching my son move away from home. I was watching him choose his path. Go get at it, son.
