“I have a deep respect for Josh as a person and a leader. He has an analytical capability second to none, a leadership style focused on success and (individual) growth. But no matter how exceptional Josh is in all these areas, I'm most impressed with Josh' compassion and ability to ALWAYS seek, find and develop the good in people. No matter who it is. He personifies excellence, dedication, commitment, and drive, combined with an ever lasting hunger for learning. I have learned a lot from Josh, I can't begin to thank him for that. But that is Josh too, all he asks is that one takes that new-found knowledge and pass it on. Thanks Josh, I will never forget my time at DaVita Rx because of you.”

Asian Health Services President Thu Quach joined Bay Area health leaders Alameda Health Consortium and the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley in Oakland to share the importance of getting health coverage during Covered California’s Open Enrollment period which ends January 31, 2026. “We know that health care coverage is the number one driver for whether someone seeks health care,” shared Quach. “It allows people to get preventive care and ongoing treatment which saves lives and saves the health care system money. Money that can be reinvested into improving our health care system.” Each year, AHS eligibility staff provide enrollment assistance in-language to thousands of Oakland residents. While Covered California provides clear options and enrollment support, AHS staff help enroll community members into these options. We are proud to have this partnership that ensures our community receives the care they need.

UCI Health is showing the industry what it looks like to combine bold vision with meaningful action. Their new Irvine hospital is more than an impressive facility. It represents a commitment to creating a patient experience that is intelligent, connected, and designed for measurable clinical and financial impact. By integrating the Get Well (part of GW RhythmX, Get Well + RhythmX AI) platform across their new campus, they are enabling smarter bedside technology, personalized procedural pathways, and post discharge navigation that strengthens both care delivery and operational reliability. What stands out most is UCI Health’s ability to think beyond individual tools and focus on the full patient journey. They understand that modern engagement must influence outcomes, reduce care team burden, and create a consistent experience across inpatient and post-acute settings. At GW RhythmX, we're advancing the vision of precision care AI and super medical intelligence, setting a new standard for reliable, personalized healthcare at scale. This is how health systems future‑proof themselves while delivering better care today. #NextGenSmartRoom #HealthAI #FutureOfCare #PrecisionCareAI Full press release here - https://lnkd.in/eJb-8hKa

Those “direct-to-physician” CDS AI tools like OpenEvidence and DoximityGPT? They're now going after health systems too. My 5 thoughts on how this will all play out: First, the gist of what was announced: → Sutter Health will integrate OpenEvidence with Epic, allowing physicians to access the AI medical search engine directly within the patient chart → UC San Diego Health is rolling DoximityGPT - their AI medical search engine - across the organization, while also making its AI scribe tool available My 5 thoughts on all this: 1/ This move to compete in the enterprise was 100% inevitable. Especially for OpenEvidence that just raised $250M at a $12B valuation, the only way to justify that valuation is to keep rapidly increasing revenue growth - and they can’t do that without increasing their Total Addressable Market beyond individual physicians. If they are truly already used by 40% of US physicians, then revenue growth is going to plateau if they don’t grow into adjacent markets. 2/ Is the Sutter Health integration of OpenEvidence and Epic just an embedded view for easy access? Or is there true data integration where a doctor can ask a question and OpenEvidence already has full context about the patient, and thus can produce a personalized answer? From the press release it sounds like just an embedded view for now, but full data integration for personalized CDS - the holy grail - seems inevitable. We know Evidently, AvoMD and others have already done this so it’s a matter of when, not if. 3/ What will be the business model? I suspect it will switch from an ad-model to a SaaS model. Health systems typically avoid ads to doctors and will also require more significant professional services for integrations, training, account management, etc and thus also cost more. 4/ How will this all work when EHRs are pushing doctors to use their own AI clinical assistants (e.g. Epic Art)? Unlike the growing competition between EHRs and AI scribes, I suspect Epic will allow companies like OpenEvidence, Doximity and UpToDate to just directly connect into Art - so doctors can access the same CDS experience. Chat itself is now a universal form factor, and as long as you’re selling licenses, the CDS companies don’t care what the access point is. As for Epic, they want to be a “software factory” and not a clinical guidelines/content factory - so I predict Epic will release a Toolbox category for CDS AI to integrate with Art. 5/ This will put major pricing pressure on UpToDate - however, UpToDate will have a head start on integrating with EHR AI assistants like Epic Art, given their longstanding partnerships with the EHRs. If I were UpToDate, I would be doing a mad dash to be the first to get AI CDS into Art and figure out a revenue share that incentivizes Epic to promote their product.

If you’re building a health tech startup, here’s a useful perspective from the accelerator side. At ViVE, I spoke with Keith Camhi, Managing Director of the Techstars Healthcare Accelerator powered by Permanente Medicine Mid-Atlantic States. The program invests in early-stage startups and helps founders run pilots with physicians in the Kaiser Permanente ecosystem. Some interesting takeaways: • Techstars still prioritizes “Team, team, team” above everything else; • Founders in the program are interviewed by physicians before acceptance; • The goal isn’t just mentorship — it’s getting real pilots with providers; • AI startups dominate applications, but the focus remains on real clinical problems. Applications for the next cohort open soon, so founders may want to keep an eye on it. Approximately one-third of Californians report carrying medical debt, a figure that rises to half for low-income families. An annual growth target for health care spending is set by the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI). This target is phased in, starting at 3.5% for 2025 & 2026, then gradually decreasing to 3.2% for 2027 & 2028 and 3% for 2029. The goal is to align the growth of health care costs with the growth of California families' median household income. There is a framework of state and federal laws requiring hospitals and health plans to disclose pricing information. These requirements include publishing standard charges, providing an online tool for estimated costs for common procedures, and disclosing negotiated rates to the public and health plans. The aim is to empower consumers with information to make informed decisions about their healthcare costs. California allocates as little as 7 cents per health care dollar to primary care. It will be increased to 15 cents per health care dollar over the next decade per the Office of Health Care Affordability (OHCA). For more insights, visit the link provided.

Sutter Health is preparing for a future where most of its care is delivered outside the walls of its hospitals. The California-based health system, like many of its peers, is also looking to reduce burden on its clinicians. I caught up with Laura Wilt, Sutter's chief digital officer, at HLTH, and we talked about some of her AI priorities, including ambient listening, reducing documentation burden on clinicians, better workflows around how data is collected, improving two-way communication with insurers, and allowing clinicians to remotely manage patients with chronic conditions. Check out our conversation below and let me know your thoughts. #healthcareonLinkedIn #BigIdeas2026
