But that rarely works. What’s often more effective is changing how WE show up. One of my favorite quotes from Rumi captures this well: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” A few years ago, when my son was a toddler, I realized I was overreacting to his bedtime shenanigans. I wanted to be a better dad — calmer, more patient, more grounded. So I started working on myself. I went back into therapy, read books, and practiced responding instead of reacting. About a year later, I shared in my men’s group that my relationship with my toddler had improved.
