Jesse Sharp, MBA liked thisJesse Sharp, MBA liked thisIn 1987, I wrapped up a business degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I was lucky enough to have Professor Jerry Foster recommend me to Steve Klug at Burlington Northern Railroad – both took a chance on me that helped to create a 39-year run in the railroad industry that I am now retiring from (boo to the U.S. Navy that determined my eyesight was too poor to fly jets). Mike Arita, Steve Cosgrove, Paul White, Dale Hawk, Gary Lewis, Pat Casey, Tom Wells and many other rail industry greats took similar bets on me for which I am deeply grateful. Both leaders and teammates at BN, APL, BNSF, CSX and TTX provided engaging learning and compelling work that challenged me with constant professional and personal growth. I was also extremely fortunate to have wonderful people on my teams – people who made me look good while keeping me grounded. Of course, none of this happens without my super-supportive family who endured 6 moves! As I look forward, I hope that I’ve left railroading no worse for wear and that others will continue to find joy in this industry that I have truly loved – both for what it does and for the incredible people who make it all happen.

This recognition reflects something I’ve always believed: economic development doesn’t have to come at the expense of equity. We can build an economy where businesses succeed, workers thrive, and hard work pays off no matter where you start or how you show up. I’m proud of the work including passing two bills, that garnered bipartisan support. Together we expanded homeownership, strengthened our workforce, and created more opportunity across Wisconsin. Progress over politics. Opportunity over division. That’s how we build an economy that works for everyone.

My son Gavin was set to compete yesterday in three track and field events at the Wisconsin State Special Olympics, but the event was canceled due to weather. While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we respond. Gavin handled the disappointment with grace—cheering on his friends competing indoors, picking up some Special Olympics swag, and enjoying a fun day of lunch and shopping. I’m so proud of his positive attitude and ability to go with the flow. The medals may have to wait, but the lessons in resilience, flexibility, and joy are victories all their own. ❤️ #SpecialOlympics #ChooseYourAttitude #Resilience #ProudMomMoment

Returning to campus brought back a lot of memories, but what stood out most was seeing how much the university continues to evolve while still feeling deeply familiar. More importantly, it was a chance to reconnect with classmates whose paths have gone in many different directions since graduation, yet somehow the conversations picked up naturally right where they left off. Basic economics playing out as expected. Wise shippers are buying strategically; and aligning durable value driven partnerships while moderately participating in cost inflation and reinvestment. On the flip side, auctioning to low rate, with disregard for durability of partnerships will eventually lead to much higher cost and disruption.
