Gae-Charles Costantini🔜 Gamescom shared thisWhat a crazy gamescom trip. Amsterdam > UK > Koln in under 8 days. Planes, Trains, Trams, Boats, Bikes and Automobiles were all used, and I guess I can still drive stick if push comes to shove. As usual Europe is the gift that keeps on giving :) Here is my high level read from Gamescom: Market is shifting. Investors have finally figured out how to come back to games, mostly project & IP financing with back-end / xmedia participation. Multiple funds, strategics, publishers on the hunt for content (still king) and trying to get the good market before they miss the window… Terms are getting more reasonable too. Publishers starting to feel the squeeze of the competition, although very much still a buyer's market, imo. On the dev side, targets are much more realistic than in the past (read: budgets that make sense). The Expectation is still playable + traction + tight scope, but the devs with this on the table are fielding multiple offers. Heard about a few pubs kicking themselves after losing a hot deal to a new entrant with faster closing skills + better terms. Take notice, stuff is moving. Got to catch up with so many comrades in arms. Friends from PlaySide Studios, CD PROJEKT RED, Counterplay Games, SNK, Xsolla, Riot, Hello Giant, Cosmic Division, Xbox, Probably Monsters, Amazon, The Core, Tencent, Room8, Dialect, Tetra Studios, Blizzard, Grindstone, Denmu, Iron Root and many more and yes, multiple Chaos Agents were also around ;) THE GOOD: 1) Xsolla sponsoring a massive meeting hangar + free premium suv transport all over town. Incredible perk. Massive props. 2) Weather luck made the town livable for our whole stay. 3) Finally tried the pork knuckle and now I know why Americans love coming here, lol. 4) ONL still drives pretty great views if you play your cards right, great job Geoff Keighley. 5) Harry Phokou's rooftop beach event was very well put together. THE BAD: 1) Hyatt Regency not allowing guests to have non-hotel guests for breakfast meetings (lol, what?) 2) German trains just outright cancelling trains for hundreds of passengers and leaving them to figure out how to leave via other means… we worked it out with a crazy roadtrip, but yikes... 3) Uber using data to just rake people over the coals for the week. Not unexpected, but still. Bolt was pretty much useless. If you are an indie, learn to use the trains + walk into cabs for a 50%-85% cost reduction. THE UGLY: Criminals stealing laptops from indie devs and the 'messe dodging the blame was so depressing to hear. Not a great look. Hope the public pressure is going to make things better in the coming years, and props to CDPR for trying to help. OVERALL though, on the "making new things" a much brighter vibe than the last few years. Still competitive, still requiring guile and innovation, but for those of us who are undeterred by the challenges of the market, It's time to get building! Publishers, Devs, Funds. I can point you all in the right direction, HMU.

Gae-Charles Costantini🔜 Gamescom shared thisBefore my time at Riot Games, Kabam, CD PROJEKT RED and Skydance Interactive, before building Chaos Manufacturing, I grew up on Real Time Strategy (RTS) games. Some of my most memorable moments were playing the ladder on Battlenet before and after highschool. I would not have played WOW and Diablo and known about Bungie without my deep early life passion for RTS games. I also, like the rest of the world, have been a huge Game of Thrones fan since season one broke my heart with Ned Stark. (I, like many others had not read the books before... sort of like with the Witcher, but that story, is for another day...) When I heard what PlaySide Studios was cooking for 'Game of Thrones: War For Westeros' I jumped out of my seat. After meeting the team, I was sold. Ryan McMahon, Benn Skender, TJ Munusamy thanks for bringing me into even a small bit of this. Very soon we have its gameplay reveal. Tune into Geoff Keighley's 'Opening Night Live' showcase, on August 25th for the full reveal during the livestream. I think you will like what we have to show you. I will have some updates soon on some cool projects Chaos Manufacturing has been involved with, but for now, Let's celebrate Fumi and PlaySide Studios for this great accomplishment. It's exceedingly rare to ship 1,000,000 units, and even more so in just a few months. It most definitely took a village to make this happen. As all endeavors of this sort do. If you want to learn about how some of the Go-to-market sauce of this and other titles I have helped with over the years came together, HMU. Glad to share what I know to help your game studio find success. It's never too early to get the voice of the audience into your executive meetings.

The organizers are wonderful and independent, something I think we need in our space. In general, a more hopeful vibe in the air for the still-pretty-devastated California games industry. New funds sprouting up, family offices and PE firms new to the space looking to get their feet wet... The next few months will be revealing. Summer Games Fest and Gamescom are just on the horizon, as is the June 2nd State of Play. Will be cool to see how the upcoming reveal season shapes up. Delphi Interactive and IO Interactive seem to have a true winner on their hands with 007 First Light. 88 Metacritic! Grats Olivier and Casper! The brand integrations are on point! I was very excited when this got announced because I thought it was an amazing developer / IP fit. Similarly, the $1B threshold on Star Citizen is a unique outcome, and making me think about developer leverage & the light at the end of every development cycle's tunnel. This one is the longest I can think of, stretching back from when a teenage yours truly was modding his computer to play Wing Commander many decades ago... Squadron 42... I want to believe. Below you can see our SOL Shogunate protagonist, Yuzuki, staring at the proverbial light at the end of her tunnel. We are hard at work cooking up some magic, as are a few of our brothers in arms, builders of the 2023-2026 batch of new studios. The future is brighter than we think. Look to the light.

Nicole Graham, MBA, CMHC and Mia Ginaé Watkins, PMP, CSM and Cara LaForge talking about how to break through the noise in today’s attention wars. TLDR: build community/audience early and be memorable. Have an angle. Audience was great also. Strong energy for 3:30pm! Was great to see new funds springing up from people that understand the underserved nature of game investing. $500M series C growth fund by Kensei (strong Sekiro reference), Simon Zhu’s Greater Than, Tim Horton and Jingtong Z.’s new Griffin indie fund as well as a bunch of others lurking in the shadows… Was going to enjoy the boat event that Midwest Games and Overwolf are throwing but it seems like the Sandy fire had other plans for me so instead I’m back home, checking my go bag with the family just in case. May the odds be ever in our favor.

Volunteering gave me the opportunity to touch the lives of people from all walks of life when they were offering what they had for the benefits of others. It also gave me keen insight on the plight of the elderly in some of the more impoverished areas of our country, and showed me how a little bit of effort can brighten someone's day significantly.
