The car wouldn't go above 40 and there was a strong smell of burning 🥵 He asked about warning lights, tyres, the usual. All fine. Then he asked her to check the handbrake... It had been on the whole drive. 🙈 This is roughly what happens when companies try to step into the agentic AI era on top of a legacy ETL stack. They buy the Ferrari, Snowflake or Databricks or whatever, and then wonder why everyone else is pulling away and something smells burnt. The handbrake is the Informatica, SSIS or Talend underneath. PowerCenter hit end of life few weeks ago. Most of the SSIS estates I see were last touched properly around 2019. Talend jobs where renaming a column is a two-week project. 🗓️ On Wednesday I'm running a webinar with Fivetran on what a migration off that stack onto dbt Labs and Fivetran actually looks like. They remembered a prototype I built from scratch back in 2006. At the time I had even named it and bought the domain - Wepinion. The idea back then was to create a space where you could collect content from around the internet onto your own virtual white board, organize it, and discuss it with your friends... 20 years later, the idea is different - but the name is the same... I thought it was a great domain name and worth holding on to -- and I am stubborn. Wepinion today is a space where the social discourse is framed by decisions. You pose a decision you or your group are facing, and people vote and tell you what they recommend given the circumstances. Simple, useful... and fun!
