🚀 Another Chicago startup closes a Series A and on an important problem Within weeks of Zarminali Pediatrics $110M Series A to reshape pediatric care, Chicago-based Prenosis announced a $20M Series A alongside a $20M contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority(BARDA). Prenosis has deep Chicago roots, with origins at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and local backing from PACE Healthcare Capital Healthcare Capital and is tackling one of healthcare’s hardest challenges: early identification of sepsis. Their ambition: launch a first-of-its-kind, FDA-authorized AI diagnostic to help clinicians detect sepsis sooner and guide better decisions in acute care settings. This moment also highlights the strength of the Chicago healthcare ecosystem, especially executives and operators who’ve seen these cycles before. Many will remember how Abbott grew through savvy acquisitions, including Hospira’s 2009 acquisition of TheraDoc, an early leader in infection surveillance and sepsis-related decision support. Prenosis is building on that lineage but with modern AI rails, deeper biology, and prospective clinical validation. EXCLUSIVE: Datavant has agreed to acquire Aetion, doubling the size of Datavant's life sciences team. “This is not a cost-cutting acquisition,” Datavant CEO Kyle Armbrester told me. “This is a growth acquisition. We’re looking to build and launch new products, and they’re fired up about that.” Datavant now has about 10,000 employees, over $1 billion in revenue, and "a ton of capacity" for more deal-making, Armbrester said.
