Casey P. Chinn posted thisLast January the Yoga Studio I'm a member at offered me a founding member's rate. I would save about $900 on an annual membership, but I would need to prepay the entire year. With how often I was taking classes there it was a no brainer. This November I started receiving texts and emails that my membership was expiring and asking if I'd like to renew. For a variety of reasons I put things off until a few weeks ago. Eventually I responded to one of the texts asking if they could remind me what the cost was on an annual membership, and was surprised to find my rate was going to increase by $1000. I pointed out I had a founders membership, and that this wasn't the rate I'd locked in a year ago. I was informed that they were no longer honoring founding memberships for people who weren't members when the studio was actually founded. And furthermore, that I should have never been offered that deal and that it had been done by "a rogue employee." I have a few problems with this situation: First, is the lack of transparency. Why was I never informed this was going to happen? For two months they'd been messaging me about renewing, but never did they mention that my current membership was no longer going to be honored or that my rate was going to increase. Had I agreed to renew back in November would I have been informed of the increase or would I have had to discovered it on my credit card bill? We'll never know. But no effort was made by management to inform me or some (any?) of the other people who believed they were locked into founding memberships pricing. While I may not know for sure, I certainly suspect what the answer is. Further, there wasn't an apology or any real acknowledgment for the policy change or the effect those changes might have on people financially. No, "sorry for the error" or "Sorry you weren't informed of the change" It was just "This came down from corporate. Our hands are tied." I understand that corporations have the right to change their policies. I don't take issue with that, but be transparent about it. Inform people of the change ahead of time. Get out in front of it! Additionally, I take umbrage with the idea of a "rogue employee". From my experience you either need to be a manager or have a managers approval to offer a deal on pricing. Front desk employees rarely have those kinds of andmin privileges. They can't just go into the system and start changing prices of things without a manage approval. But even if there was a rogue employee, management should own up to it as their mistake and not pass the buck or point the finger. Employees go rogue or become disgruntled for a reason. These kind of employees are not born, they're made, and the buck stops with the manager. Pointing the finger is avoid responsibility. All of these problems are symptomatic of bad management. And for a company that purports to want to build community, their actions have instead eroded the trust of their patrons.

Casey P. Chinn liked thisLike many of you, I’m struggling to articulate everything Dolly Parton represented to me. The Dolly of my childhood and the Dolly I came to understand as an adult contained multitudes within the same fiercely feminine frame. An entrepreneur, an artist, a philanthropist, an optimist, a fighter, a jokester, a joiner... Someone who believed that life was something you participated in fully. We live in a world that loves binaries. Serious or silly. Feminine or powerful. Ambitious or generous. Smart or sexy. Tough or tender. Successful or kind. Dolly didn’t just cross those lines; she splashed color all over them and, naturally, added rhinestones. She was glamorous and substantive. Shrewd and generous. Tough and tender. Wildly ambitious and deeply compassionate. She could laugh at herself while taking her work and her responsibility to others incredibly seriously. And she never seemed interested in making any of those contradictions easier for the rest of us to understand. She was unapologetically, unmistakably herself. I think there is something incredibly powerful about watching a person live that way. Because every time someone refuses to make themselves smaller or simpler to fit into the boxes we’ve created, they give the rest of us a little more permission to do the same. Dolly built things. She created. She took risks. She gave back. She showed up. She joined in. She remained hopeful without being naive and successful without becoming cynical. There are very few people whose existence feels like proof of a way of living. She was one of them. After eight surgeries and countless visits, we truly consider the hospital our second home.
