Is Passive House the answer? Well, I guess it depends on the question, but given the consistent excellence of the submission to the The Passive House Network and Passive House California (PHCA) Rebuild California design competition, the answer is, unequivocally, YES! We are thrilled to share our thoughts behind our winning submission to the competition for ecologically sensitive fire-resilient homes for Pacific Palisades and Altadena with Joann Gonchar, FAIA, LEED AP of Architectural Record in the latest issue! Passive House is the answer not because it lowers energy use - it's the answer, almost always, because it prioritizes our humanity. Our ability to focus on living reliably wherever we are in synthesis with our ecosystem, rather than in opposition to it. Our entry proposes biogenically dense modular #CLT walls aggregated to define both indoor and outdoor spaces, even on a tight site, paired with completely demountable, lightly framed exterior support and shading structures.
