The word coach didn’t originally mean instructor, motivator, or expert. It meant transport. A coach was something that helped people get from one place to another. You got in, stated your destination, and the coach carried you there. That definition matters more than we realize when we talk about leadership. A coach isn’t the destination. A coach isn’t the decision-maker. A coach isn’t the one doing the walking. A coach helps someone move from where they are to where they want to go. That’s the heart of the Coach Approach. In leadership conversations, it’s easy to confuse movement with direction. Talking more feels helpful. Advising feels responsible. Teaching feels like leadership. But often, all it does is move the conversation toward your thinking instead of their clarity. That’s where the communication continuum becomes helpful to visualize. On one end of the continuum is talking, teaching, advising. -Your opinions. Your thoughts. Your perspective. You own it. On the other end is listening, reflecting, and asking. -Their perspective. Their thinking. Their conclusions. They own it. Most leaders drift to the right side of that continuum without noticing. Especially under pressure. Especially when time is tight. The Coach Approach intentionally moves left. It’s not passive. It’s not hands-off. It’s purposeful restraint. -You listen long enough to understand where they are. -You reflect what you’re hearing so they can hear themselves. -You ask questions that help them see the path forward. -You’re not dragging them. -You’re not pushing them. -You’re not telling them where to go. -You’re helping them travel. When leadership stays on the right side of the continuum, ownership stays with the leader. When leadership shifts left, ownership transfers. And ownership is what allows people to arrive somewhere new on their own. That’s why coaching is less about answers and more about movement. Less about fixing and more about guiding. Less about your voice and more about their clarity. A good coach doesn’t change the destination. They help make the journey possible!
