Akosa Akpom liked thisAkosa Akpom liked thisIn high school, I wrote 1,000 letters to the most important, successful, famous, infamous, known people of the 20th century. I was uncertain as to what I was going to be doing with my life, but I knew that I wanted to do something that would lead to financial success and some notoriety. It was a big ask for a kid from the Deep South without connections, and a lot of future student loans. These letters helped me understand that remarkable people were real, accessible and human. If they were human, why couldn’t I aspire to do something really cool or great as well. Colin Powell died today at age 84. When he was 55 and in his last military post - the highest of the land in the Department of Defense - he actually spent a few moments of his very busy life to write me back. Me. A nobody from nowhere with big aspirations and no specific plan other than college. Of the 1,000 letters I sent, I received so many directional, substantive, heartfelt responses. I hope on the day of Mr. Powell’s passing, you take a moment to recognize his greatest accomplishment was to be “a service to our country” in making America “the shining beacon to the world.” A kind act 30 years ago has me tearing up. Sheesh. ❤️
