With the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Chapter's nominations being revealed earlier, there are a couple of familiar faces who we'd like to recognize. “The Ocean – Five Years” from FLYING SCOOTER PRODUCTIONS and "Pursuing Light: The Bill Strickland Story" from Karen Somers tell two different stories that touch upon the arts world of Pittsburgh, and both have been nominated for Best Documentary. "The Ocean – Five Years" is the deeply personal story of composer Brett McCutcheon, who turned the pain of losing his brother Ryan into music that gives voice to love and loss. Featuring musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, June Bracken, The Voice’s Chris Jamison, and other acclaimed artists, the documentary fuses music with personal stories of grief, resilience and hope. "Pursuing Light: The Bill Strickland Story” is a transformative documentary following artist, educator, and visionary Bill Strickland. Through his youth arts and workforce centers, he proves that talent is universal but opportunity is not, showing how beauty, dignity, and high expectations can change lives and communities. Our good friends Nathalie Berry and Paul Ruggieri were also nominated for best long form educational content for their piece "The Power of Dance," which follows along with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's classes at East Liberty Presbyterian Church's Hope Academy of Music, where ballet fundamentals are taught to young students. Congratulations to all of you on this amazing accomplishment, and thank you all for your dedication to chronicling the stories of southwestern Pennsylvania. 🫶

The globe-trotting American flag that visited our region in the days leading up to the 4th of July has completed its journey in Washington, DC. “There’s no better place to celebrate learning than [WQED].” - Katie O'Connor Families make Pittsburgh their first choice to live to give their children the best possible start, and they make PBS KIDS programming their first choice in entertainment for similar reasons. A little while back, the WQED education team hosted our PBS KIDS Night in the Neighborhood, a night with Pittsburgh’s first family—Mayor Corey O'Connor, Katie, Molly, and Emmett—for a family-friendly evening in the WQED studios (originally Mellon Park, but some summer thunderstorms had other ideas ⛈️). Awaiting our guests were stations full of educational, interactive, and (most-importantly) fun activities and games based on PBS KIDS programs, as well as their favorite PBS KIDS characters who stopped by to join in the fun. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a night of laughter and learning for both children and parents alike, we can't wait to see you all in our neighborhood again soon. 🫶

Today, our wonderful neighbors at Fred Rogers Productions are launching their Mister Rogers' Neighborhood YouTube channel which will be uploading full episodes over the weeks and months to come. They'll begin with five episodes, including the the very first one shot right in our studios on September 21, 1967. We're so thrilled that fans who grew up with the show will have access to their favorite episodes as they're uploaded, and doubly so that a new generation will get to discover and learn about the importance of kindness as Fred so thoughtfully demonstrated to all of us over the years.
