Healthcare is about more than treating people when they’re sick — it’s also about preventing illness and addressing the needs that impact health before someone ever reaches a hospital or doctor’s office. New York’s Social Care Networks are putting that principle into action by connecting people to the food, housing, transportation, and other resources they need to stay healthy and thrive. A major step forward for health equity in the Bronx. Governor Kathy Hochul and Congressman Ritchie Torres announced a nearly $10 million investment to complete a new cardiac catheterization laboratory at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, expanding access to lifesaving cardiac care for South Bronx residents. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in New York State. As Congressman Torres noted, there is an approximately 10-year life expectancy gap between the South Bronx and Manhattan's Upper East Side, despite being only four miles apart. This investment is a critical step toward addressing longstanding disparities in access to specialized cardiac care. Close to 200,000 New Yorkers have been impacted by federal cuts to the Essential Plan, leaving many residents, including Hispanics communities, scrambling to understand their health coverage options and, in some cases, learning they've lost coverage only when seeking medical care. In a recent City Limits article, Our President & CEO, Cassaundra Howell highlighted one of the key challenges facing those affected: “The complexity is that these notices and letters include a lot of mandatory legal language that’s difficult to interpret and therefore, it’s difficult to understand if you are impacted, why you are impacted, and what actions you can take.” Clear, accessible information is critical to ensuring New Yorkers can make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage and avoid unnecessary disruptions in care. We’re proud to announce that PHS has been awarded a new tobacco control grant, expanding our health systems work across all of New York City. For more than 15 years, NYC Smoke-Free at Public Health Solutions has led tobacco control initiatives focused on community and youth engagement. Now, we are expanding our impact by partnering with healthcare organizations, community health centers, hospitals and behavioral health providers to integrate evidence-based tobacco treatment into routine care. Our approach goes beyond individual cessation programs by improving clinical workflows, strengthening provider capacity, leveraging data and building sustainable partnerships to ensure patients have consistent access to tobacco screening, treatment and cessation support. This work is critical to advancing tobacco control, reducing health disparities and improving long-term health outcomes across communities. With this award, PHS is honored to lead both tobacco control grants funded by the New York State Department of Health, serving all of New York City. Hooks and Councilwoman Shanel Thomas-Henry as they co-hosted their first-ever Community Baby Shower at the Queens Museum, celebrating and supporting expecting parents and families with newborns across Corona, East Elmhurst, Lefrak City, and Sherwood Village. Alongside community and hospital partners, our team delivered a Guide to Breastfeeding educational presentation, connected low-income pregnant and parenting families to valuable health and social support services, and distributed diapers to meet essential needs. Every family deserves access to the information, resources, and support they need to give their children a healthy start.
