Earlier this week, we welcomed back many of the scientists who helped shape the Versiti Blood Research Institute for a special hard hat tour. For decades, these pioneers asked bold questions, pursued discoveries and dedicated their work to improving life for patients. The breakthroughs they helped advance continue to shape care and save lives today. As they walked through the VBRI expansion, they saw more than a new building. They saw the future of blood health research rising on the foundation they helped create. Together, they reflected on how far the Institute has come and imagined the discoveries that will begin within these walls. It was a meaningful reminder that progress is never the work of one person or one generation. It is carried forward by people who believe deeply in what is possible. This expansion is possible because of the generosity of our community and a shared belief in the power of science to change lives. It will create more room for collaboration, discovery and the pursuit of better answers for patients. To the pioneers who helped build this legacy: thank you. Your work continues to move the mission forward and inspire what comes next.

The Versiti Blood Research Institute is honored to welcome Jorge Di Paola, MD, as Versiti’s executive vice president and chief scientific officer. A nationally recognized leader in hematology and translational research, Dr. Di Paola will help advance our work in blood disorders, transfusion medicine, genomics and cellular therapies. We look forward to the discoveries, partnerships and progress ahead as we work together to improve lives and shape the future of blood health.

The Versiti Blood Research Institute joins the hematology and scientific communities in remembering Richard Herbert “Dick” Aster, M.D. Dr. Aster devoted his career to advancing understanding of immune platelet disorders and improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients affected by serious blood diseases. His research helped shape modern hematology and transfusion medicine and influenced patient care worldwide. As a scientist, mentor and institutional leader, Dr. Aster also helped build the Blood Research Institute into a globally respected center for hematology and immunology research. Even after retiring as president and CEO of the Blood Center of Wisconsin, he remained deeply engaged in scientific discovery and mentorship as a senior investigator until 2021. Those who trained and worked with Dr. Aster remember not only his scientific rigor, but also his generosity, humility and enduring commitment to others. His legacy lives on through the science he advanced, the investigators he mentored and the patients ultimately served through that work.
