THIS WEEK'S COVER STORY. The great Brian Steinberg spoke with a number of sources who painted the picture of what Savannah Guthrie's return to "Today" will likely look like — and the larger financial stakes at NBC News. Scroll through the graphic cards I made below (at Variety, we're always experimenting with new ways to share the juiciest news bites with our readers on social) and click here to read the full digital cover: wp.me/pc8uak-1lH4WR
SAVANNAH GUTHRIE RETURNS TO ‘TODAY’ #SavannahGuthrie will return to “Today” on April 6, more than two months after stepping away amid the unresolved disappearance of her mother, Nancy. The anchor will likely address her absence and ask viewers to bear with her while navigating her first weeks back, sources familiar with the network tell Variety. Guthrie is stepping into uncharted territory. Anchors aren’t supposed to be part of the news cycle. Normally, they just report it. But Guthrie is emerging from a bizarre moment during which she and her family were part of a gripping national story — and, because her mother has yet to be found, the narrative has not come to any conclusion. “NBC News has the journalistic obligation to keep covering the story, but also the personal and moral obligation to make sure Guthrie is protected from any undue stress or emotional harm from the coverage,” says Ben Bogardus, chair of the department of journalism at Quinnipiac University. Sam Altman says he felt “terrible” telling The Walt Disney Company CEO Josh D’Amaro about OpenAI’s decision to kill Sora, hinting that the companies are still looking to work together: “It’s super sad always to disappoint a partner or users or a team all of which doing incredible work. There are like many hard parts about being a CEO that you don’t get sympathy for… but one of them is, like, you have to like make a lot of like very tough resourcing calls and a lot of good things get caught up in that because they’re not the most important thing.” https://lnkd.in/gzkGWwRj
