  • This copy of Mao Zedong's Little Red Book is stamped with the Beijing address of African-American activist Robert F. Williams, former head of the NAACP in Monroe, North Carolina. Williams fled the US in 1961, living first in Cuba and then China. Preserved with this is a pamphlet issued after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the original mailing envelope, addressed to Chapel Hill and postmarked “Peking.” Williams eventually returned to the US, and authorities dropped all charges against him.  This item from the Rare Book Collection is on display as a part of our newest exhibition, Alphabet of Treasures: Special Collections from A to Z. View the exhibition in the Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room on the third floor of Wilson Library any time the library is open.
