About us
Freedom of the press and humanity are the foundation of The Epoch Times. The Epoch Times was born out of a great need to provide uncensored news to a people immersed in propaganda and censorship in China. Having witnessed events like the Tiananmen Square massacre and the persecution of the spiritual group Falun Gong, and at great risk to themselves and their loved ones, a group of Chinese Americans started publishing The Epoch Times in the Chinese language in the United States. When we launched in 2000, we had reporters and editors in China; they were soon arrested, and some suffered severe torture. To this day, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been relentless in its efforts to assault our operations and stop us from pursuing our mission—including by ransacking our offices, attacking our websites, and setting our printing press on fire in Hong Kong. In English, our first edition was published online in 2003, followed by the first print edition in 2004. Our beginnings have instilled in Epoch Times staff an unwavering commitment to integrity, truthfulness in reporting, and respect for human rights and freedom. As an independent media organization, The Epoch Times is free from the influence of any government, corporation, or political party. Our aim is to give you the information you need to make up your own mind. We remain committed to our founding mission to expose the CCP’s human rights abuses in China and its ongoing campaign to subvert Western societies and fundamental freedoms and values.

As commander in chief of the Continental Army, Gen. George Washington was responsible for defending the newly declared United States. Throughout July and August of 1776, he and his staff watched from New York City headquarters as hundreds of enemy ships delivered more than 32,000 professional soldiers and auxiliaries from Great Britain and Hesse-Kassel (a historical German state) to Staten Island, intent on extinguishing American independence. Most historians agree that Britain had assembled the largest overseas expeditionary force in its history—a record that stood until World War I. When the British struck on the morning of Aug. 27, the Americans were routed. By nightfall, Washington, many of his best officers, and more than 9,000 soldiers were trapped on the Brooklyn Heights peninsula, with their backs to the East River. A disaster of that magnitude could have forced the nation’s surrender and ended the Revolution. Of the roughly 19,000 troops available to defend the New York area, about half were inexperienced militiamen. Around 9 p.m. the night before the main blow, a British force of 10,000 redcoats—led by Howe, Clinton, Cornwallis, and Lord Hugh Percy and guided by three Loyalist farmers—marched east in silence around the Continental left flank. Gen. Washington watched from a nearby redoubt as the "Maryland 400" repeatedly attacked a much larger force, crying, “Good God, what brave fellows I must this day lose!” At 4 p.m. on Aug. 29, Washington convened a council of war. The decision was unanimous: abandon Long Island. By 11 p.m., the evacuation was underway. Glover’s men ferried soldiers, horses, equipment, and artillery across the river to Manhattan. But the operation proceeded slowly. By dawn, less than half had escaped. The discovery of the evacuation could trigger an immediate British attack. Then a dense fog rolled in, blanketing Brooklyn Heights and the East River and obscuring the Americans’ activity. Under its cover, the evacuation continued. The deception worked. Mifflin’s rear guard quietly withdrew from the trenches and boarded the boats. By 7 a.m., the evacuation was complete. Witnesses noted Washington was among the last to depart. Once the last boats were away, the fog lifted, and redcoats were seen rushing toward the shore. The hunters missed the hunted by mere minutes. Britain won a decisive victory at the Battle of Long Island at the cost of 64 killed, 293 wounded, and 31 missing or captured. American losses were more staggering: 300 dead, 650 to 800 wounded, and up to 1,100 captured. Washington, however, refused to quit. He denied the British the victory that mattered most—the destruction of his army. With help from Glover’s Marbleheads and divine providence—which contemporaries credited with providing the fog—Washington’s army lived to fight another day. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebjiuuta

BREAKING: This island nation of 18,000 people just stood up to China in a big way. Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr. is refusing to abandon Taiwan. And his country is now under mounting economic pressure from the CCP over the decision. Here’s what happened: Three members of the Pacific Islands Forum have switched their diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in recent years. Last year’s host of the Forum, the Solomon Islands, excluded Taiwan under pressure from the CCP. This year, Palau restored Taiwan’s participation. In retaliation, Whipps says China is “weaponizing” tourism against Palau by throttling the flow of Chinese tourists. But he’s not backing down. “Taiwan is a partner.” Palau’s refusal to abandon Taiwan is a critical moment in the CCP’s march to expanding its global power.
