Join us in congratulating Drs. Kathrin Bernt and Jeremy Grenier who were awarded $700,000 in total from Hyundai Hope on Wheels to advance vital pediatric cancer research. They were recognized during a handprint ceremony this month with representatives from local Hyundai dealerships, clinical and research staff from our Cancer Center and patient families impacted by pediatric cancer. 💛 Dr. Bernt received the Scholar Hope Grant to study the immunotherapy drug blinatumomab for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and investigate why some patients do not respond to the treatment. Dr. Jeremy Grenier received the Young Investigator Grant to study how CAR-T cell therapy can be optimized for children with B-ALL.

"Often in research we’re looking at things that are problematic...equally important is understanding resilience and strengths." Black autistic youth and their families, as well as other people of color, girls and women in the autism community, have long been significantly underrepresented in research. Dr. Ashlee Yates Flanagan, a scientist at the Center for Autism Research at CHOP, is looking to change that. The Philadelphia Tribune interviewed Dr. Yates Flanagan about her research journey and the exciting studies her lab is conducting.

Announcing a webinar series from our Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences focused on Navigating Real World Ethics in Pediatric Psychology. At 10 years old, Nathan began having multiple seizures a day. Medication wasn't enough to control them, and he was diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy. An MRI and EEG revealed the cause: a benign brain tumor near the left temporal lobe. After determining he was a good candidate for epilepsy surgery, Nathan underwent a procedure to remove the tumor and stop his seizures. Today, Nathan, 13, is seizure-free, plays travel basketball and getting ready to start the 8th grade. Throughout 2026, we’re celebrating the many firsts that have made CHOP a world leader in pediatric healthcare. Today, we’re highlighting an important milestone in intensive care for newborns. As CHOP’s Surgeon-in-Chief, a position he held from 1948 to 1981, Dr. C. Everett Koop started the first surgical NICU in the United States at CHOP in 1962. We now have two Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Units: the Harriet and Ronald Lassin N/IICU on our Philadelphia Campus and the N/IICU in the Middleman Family Pavilion on our King of Prussia Campus.
