While the friendly skies weren’t so friendly to Lizzy Pollott and others whose plane got turned around over Greenland and sent back to London (everyone was fine!), the show must go on. On it went, and the first Podcast Movement at SXSW was awesome. From an NPR-led discussion on the data that will help bring more ad dollars to the space, to a quick Spotify preso on “staying weird” (exploring topics many don’t typically broach!), to our own panel, lots of wisdom emerged on the current and future state of podcasting from multiple angles. Loved chatting with Debbie Hiott (GM of our partner KUT & KUTX Public Media) in person and hearing about all of the initiatives they have in place to keep their station growing, including their ongoing focus on the local #Austin community. Scott Porretti, president of Katz Digital ( ⭐ our hero ⭐ for filling in for Lizzy at literally the last minute), and I got into how the #adtech side can help public media get through the current funding thicket. And Axios’ Kerry Flynn directed what became a free-flowing conversation perfectly. But we all did just as much learning from a great audio publisher first hand. Video of the session to come, but the overarching point to me was the need for podcasters and radio stations to consider *everything* at their disposal – from community building to innovation to ads – to keep public media (and audio overall) flourishing long into the future. When an ad comes up on your favorite #podcast, what goes through your mind? “Yeah, i’ve been meaning to get a new mattress?” “If i hear this mattress ad again i’m actually not going to sleep tonight?” “Yeah i’m hearing this mattress ad again but it means i get to hear my favorite show today?” Some #publicmedia stations, faced with unprecedented funding cuts, have started introducing #programmatic ads into their podcasts and streams, hoping listeners won’t be too thrown off by the change in tone from what they’re used to. In some cases, alongside some education, listener response has been quite the contrary. In public media or otherwise, responsible #audio publishers are being as transparent as possible with listeners to help them understand what keeps their beloved content coming. Taking action to ensure #podcasting and streaming #audio continue moving forward – including the advertising that helps power it – comes in many forms. IAB has formed a new working group dedicated to producing insights that show marketers how audio drives great outcomes.
