They’re trained on text, not on the causal relationships inside your business data. Here’s a take most people won’t say out loud: A meaningful portion of the research industry exists to avoid decisions. Not intentionally. But structurally. ➡️Because if you never isolate what changes what, you never have to commit. You can always say: ‣We need more data. ‣We need another cut. ‣We need to validate. ‣We need to go deeper. And it sounds responsible. But in practice? It’s expensive hesitation. Correlation makes that easy. It gives you patterns without accountability. It gives you interpretation without consequence. But the moment you ask: ‣What happens if we change price? ‣What happens if we reposition? ‣What happens if we remove this feature? ‣What happens if we go after a different audience? Correlation has very little to say. And that’s the moment you realize: ➡️you don’t have a decision system. You have a description system. That’s the difference. The teams that get ahead will be the ones that move from describing the market to modeling choices inside it. ☞That’s where research becomes decision-grade. I’ve made this mistake myself—confusing clean synthesis with decision quality. ‣You build the deck. ‣You map the themes. ‣You segment the audience. And none of it tells you what to bet on. That’s not insight. That’s expensive observation. ☑︎Uncomfortable truth: A lot of “insights work” is just decision avoidance with better language. ‣It feels rigorous. ‣It sounds smart. But when revenue is soft, churn is rising, and runway is finite, “interesting” is useless. If the work doesn’t change: ‣what you fund ‣what you kill ‣what you ship ‣what you stop pretending might work it didn’t do the job. I don’t care if it’s accurate. If it doesn’t create commitment, it’s incomplete. Because in real businesses, delay has a cost. You pay for it in missed quarters, wasted spend, and teams building the wrong thing with full confidence. Correlation explains the past. ☞Decisions require causation.
