The second installment of our Indian Bay series is out today. For this story, I looked at how much the Indian American community has grown in the Tri-Valley, which is home to some of the fastest-growing cities in the state. That growth is fueled by high-earning professionals who can afford these new suburban subdivisions. Disproportionately, those professionals are Asian American, and in particular Indian American, many re-creating Silicon Valley life in the green fields and wide open spaces of the East Bay. Check out why these cities are attractive for so many people and how the community has managed to pass on their culture to the next generations. https://lnkd.in/gWUQWEtx

Today we published the first installment of our Indian Bay series -- a deep dive into how Indian Americans have transformed the Bay Area. From 2010 to 2024, Indian Americans and immigrants from India were the fastest-growing ethnic group in a region that now has a larger share of Indians than anywhere else in the country. We analyzed demographic and economic data and spoke to dozens of people in cities across the Bay Area. What emerged is a picture of a vibrant and influential community at a crossroads — and the potential economic vulnerability of a region that has grown alongside it. https://lnkd.in/dmDDrsuW

Meta began laying off about 8,000 workers Wednesday, carrying out one of its largest rounds of job cuts in years as the Silicon Valley tech giant redirects money and staff toward artificial intelligence. The cuts amount to roughly 10% of the Facebook parent’s workforce and come as the Menlo Park company also reassigns about 7,000 employees to new AI-related teams. https://lnkd.in/gwxYwSrQ

Dublin's recently opened H Mart is emblematic of the new kinds of anchor tenants arriving throughout East Bay suburbs defined by strip malls, chain grocery stores and sprawling parking lots: popular Asian supermarkets. My latest story looks at the different Asian grocery stores and food halls coming to the East Bay -- at least three in the next year! Local officials have celebrated the openings as economic drivers bringing attractive new retail to increasingly vacant storefronts and helping to drive sales tax revenue. Retail experts say demand for the retailers is growing faster than other grocery stores like Safeway and Sprouts. https://lnkd.in/geZcj7KR

The San Francisco Chronicle won the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism on Monday for its investigation into how major home insurance companies leave California homeowners unable to rebuild after catastrophic wildfires, even when they have what they thought was full coverage. “Burned,” written by reporters Megan Munce, Susie Neilson and Sara DiNatale with the support of more than a dozen colleagues, examined previously unreported practices by the insurance industry, finding that major companies use faulty algorithms and hidden cost-cutting schemes to drastically underpay survivors, threatening the recovery and health of whole communities. One of San Francisco’s notable office towers was up for auction last week, a 20-story, 360,000-square-foot Class A building on one of the most coveted corridors in the North Financial District. Nobody who showed up to the stretch of sidewalk in the shadow of City Hall where the sale was held Thursday was there to bid on the polished, quietly assertive building that was once valued at over $320 million. #sanfrancisco #realestate #office #downtownrecovery #wework #towers San Francisco Chronicle https://lnkd.in/gA_jQRQQ

EXCLUSIVE: After years of sitting mostly empty in Union Square, the former location of the Barneys flagship store may be getting a second act. San Francisco billionaire investor Michael Moritz is said to be eyeing the iconic corner property at Stockton and O’Farrell Streets for his family foundation. The longtime venture capitalist is exploring a plan to turn the six-story building at 48 Stockton St., known for its soaring ceilings and historic architectural details, into a consolidated hub for parts of his business and philanthropic portfolio. https://lnkd.in/ghB8yT4N
