About us
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, known for its artistic excellence for more than 120 years, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Past music directors have included Fritz Reiner (1938-1948), William Steinberg (1952-1976), André Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and Mariss Jansons (1995-2004). This tradition of outstanding music directors was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. The orchestra has been at the forefront of championing new American works, and gave the first performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” in 1944 and John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine in 1986. The Pittsburgh Symphony has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and radio concerts. Its “Pittsburgh Live!” series with Reference Recordings has resulted in back-to-back Grammy Award nominations in 2015 and 2016. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony radio broadcasts aired nationally and in the late 1970s it made the ground breaking PBS series “Previn and the Pittsburgh.” Since 1982, the orchestra has been heard through national network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International, produced by Classical WQED-FM, made possible by the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. At home in historic Heinz Hall, the Pittsburgh Symphony offers a variety of musical experiences, including its BNY Mellon Grand Classics and PNC Pops series, FUSE@PSO series, Fiddlesticks Family Concerts series, specials, and numerous community engagement and education concerts throughout the region. With a long and distinguished history of touring both domestically and overseas since 1900 — including international tours to Europe, the Far East and South America—the Pittsburgh Symphony continues to be critically acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest orchestras.

My time at Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as an intern is coming to an end and I have learned so much! At the beginning of the summer, I had no idea the memories I would make and the skills I would learn. My favorite part of the summer was getting to work on the European Tour! I was able to help create booklets they will be using while traveling. I also got to learn more about the education and artistic departments as well. From shadowing concerts to helping with auditions, my summer was full of lots of learning and fun. I will miss all the people I have gotten to know at the PSO! They made me feel like a part of the team from day one. Now I am onto my final year of graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University!

Eleven years ago, I began at the Pittsburgh Symphony and found in Manfred Honeck a Music Director who had already spent seven years building an orchestra of extraordinary depth, and who understood that young people were not just future audiences, but today's as well. When he re-signed as Music Director through 2032–33, extending a tenure that will make him the longest-serving in our 131-year history, he told me the years ahead needed to reach further into this region. This week, thanks to support from Manfred Honeck, we announced that a student's first Pittsburgh Symphony ticket is now free through the PSO Go program. I've had the privilege of partnering with Manfred since May 2015 on a shared vision for an orchestra that belongs to its region. Watching him take this step personally, nearly two decades into his leadership here, is a reminder of why this incredible partnership has lasted and why I believe the next chapter, with more students at Heinz Hall than ever before, will be our most meaningful yet. What a privilege it was today for me and fellow members of Highmark Health’s marketing team to attend a rehearsal of the renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall. While I have always had admiration for these world-class musicians and their talents, witnessing them in their “practice” environment was a truly unique and enjoyable experience. There's something profoundly inspiring about seeing the dedication, discipline, and collaborative spirit that goes into perfecting their artistry. We are so fortunate to be just a few blocks away from such a cultural gem and to have opportunities like this to connect with the vibrant arts community in our city. Today the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra announces the extension of Music Director Manfred Honeck’s contract through the 2032/2033 season, amounting to a 25-year partnership that will make him the longest-serving Music Director in the Orchestra’s 131-year history. With this renewal, Manfred is set to fulfill a historic 25-year tenure with the PSO, which began in 2008.
