What happens when you give high school students a microphone and a museum to explore? Introducing Piece by Piece, a new podcast created by local high school students through the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Teen Podcast Intensive. For its first season, A Cacophony of Artists, students researched works from A Nation of Artists, interviewed curators, scholars, and other voices, and took on roles as producers, showrunners, hosts, and sound designers. The result is three original episodes exploring works by Dorothea Tanning, Albert Bierstadt, and N. C. Wyeth, each shaped by the students’ own questions and perspectives. This September marks 100 years since the birth of John Coltrane, one of the most transformative artists in American music. Coltrane came of age in Philadelphia, where he found his voice, built his community, and launched a musical revolution that would change the world. As part of Coltrane 100 Philly, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is celebrating his centennial with a month of performances, jazz nights, a film screening, and a special Coltrane Festival on September 20. John Singer Sargent became one of the most sought-after portrait painters of his time, but those commissions weren't his whole story. Whenever commissions allowed, Sargent headed outdoors, painting waterfalls, moonlit gardens, Venetian canals, and afternoons spent beneath the trees. These works were freer, more experimental, and often created simply for the joy of painting. Two rarely seen paintings from the Middleton Family Collection showcase this side of his practice: "Group with Parasols" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and "In a Garden, Corfu" at PAFA. Together, they reveal the freedom and experimentation that defined Sargent's work beyond the portrait studio. Experience both works through A Nation of Artists and discover how each museum reveals a different side of Sargent's story.
