It’s true: not everyone can go to Washington D.C. and visit the Smithsonian museums. So, Smithsonian is coming to them! This fall, the Perry County District Library will bring Smithsonian programs to its community. Today, the world lost a legend and libraries lost a true friend. Dolly Parton died at age 80, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of music, generosity, and a lifelong commitment to children and literacy. In 1995, inspired by her father's inability to read, Dolly created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a simple but powerful idea to put books into the hands and homes of children. Since then, the program has gifted more than 304 million books to children around the world, including more than 26 million books to children here in Ohio. Ohio's public libraries have been honored to be part of that legacy. In 2022, Ohio Library Council members were invited to attend First Lady Fran DeWine’s luncheon celebrating the success of the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio, where Dolly herself joined the celebration. Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the generosity and most of all, for believing that every child deserves a story. 🩷

Ohio's public libraries are feeling the impact of state funding cuts while continuing to meet the needs of their communities. From reduced hours and closed branches to difficult decisions about staffing and services, libraries across Ohio are being asked to do more with less. Innovation is thriving in Ohio's public libraries! Congratulations to the North Canton Public Library on the launch of its new LibraryGo Mini inside Acme Fresh Market, bringing library materials directly into the daily routines of community members. As just the second library in the United States to install a LibraryGo Mini, North Canton Public Library is demonstrating how our libraries continue to meet people where they are.
After nearly a year of planning, collaboration, and problem-solving, I'm excited to share that the North Canton Public Library has officially launched our new LibraryGo Mini inside Acme Fresh Market in North Canton. The LibraryGo Mini allows North Canton Public Library cardholders to browse and check out a curated collection of books while they're grocery shopping, making it easier than ever to fit reading into everyday life. Even more exciting, North Canton Public Library is just the second library in the United States to install a LibraryGo Mini. The only other installation is at the Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame. (As a diehard Irish fan, I’d say we’re in pretty good company! ☘️) While the technology is exciting, what I'm most proud of is what it represents. Public libraries have always adapted to meet the changing needs of their communities. Whether it's expanding accessibility, offering technology training, delivering materials to homebound patrons, or partnering with local organizations, our goal is always the same: remove barriers and make library services easier to access. As we prepare for our upcoming renovation, that philosophy has been front and center. We know our building won't always be as easy to access during construction, so we've been asking ourselves a simple question: How can we bring the library to our community, instead of always asking our community to come to the library? The LibraryGo Mini is one answer. Projects like this don't happen because of one person. They happen because talented staff embrace new ideas, community partners are willing to think creatively, and a Board of Trustees supports innovation. I'm grateful to our team, our Board, and our partners at Acme Fresh Market for helping bring this vision to life.
