Out of the Archives: This 1913 illustration showed that City Water Tunnel No. 1 was as deep as the world’s tallest building was high. While the tunnel was under construction, the Woolworth Building had just been completed and captured the world’s attention, making it a timely reference point. As New York City grew, so did its need for drinking water. Note the teeny little workers and carts drawn inside the tunnel. The glorious photo of the Woolworth Building, scanned from the original glass plate negative, was taken June 16, 1914, from the Municipal Building’s 35th floor.
