On this Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and gender-diverse people of Indigenous nations across Turtle Island. Gender diversity is not new to Native communities. It is ancient, sacred, and embedded in the traditions of hundreds of nations. The Navajo Nádleeh, the Zuni Lhamana, the Lakota winkte, the Crow baté, and countless others — each of these identities carried deep meaning and social purpose within their communities, often as healers, ceremonial leaders, and cultural bridges. Colonization worked hard to erase this. Missionary pressure, boarding schools, and imposed gender binaries caused immeasurable harm. And yet our people persisted, carrying their traditions forward and reclaiming them today with power and pride. Today, many use the term Two-Spirit. But we know that identity is inherently an individual and unique experience, so finding one term to describe a community will always be a challenge. And because many Indigenous cultures’ ideas of gender are multidimensional and complex, while Western ideas of gender are traditionally binary, direct translation between the two loses some context and nuance. At Native Americans in Philanthropy, we strongly believe in the right to self-determination, which includes respecting our relatives’ identities. In our current era of increasing attacks on transgender and queer people, it is imperative that we stand purposefully in solidarity with all our relatives, and give full dignity and respect to ALL Native peoples. With support from Newman's Own Foundation, Urban School Food Alliance is strengthening procurement systems so districts can source better ingredients and run smoother school food service. Here's what they accomplished in 2025:  🌾 Five Local Producer Webinars connecting 62 districts with 247 producers  📋 "Team Up" trainings on the 12 essential procurement steps   🥗 Plant-forward K-12 recipes supporting nutritious, student-approved meals With 3.8 million students across 6,889 sites, these improvements scale fast.
