NDIT is taking a proactive and intentional approach to reducing tech debt across state government—modernizing aging systems and infrastructure before they become more costly and complex to maintain. A key part of this work is updating the state’s remaining mainframe environment and strategically transitioning applications to newer platforms. This effort, along with broader technology improvements across infrastructure, applications, cybersecurity, and data integration, will help reduce complexity, strengthen reliability and security, and create a more flexible foundation for future innovation. The big takeaway? Brian D. Newby has spent nearly 25 years starting his mornings with a run, averaging about 30 miles a week and completing more than 20 long-distance races. So it’s fitting that today he has his sights set on a different kind of finish line. His career hasn’t exactly followed a straight course, either. Brian once dreamed of becoming PR Director for the Kansas City Royals before his journey took him through telecommunications, local government, election administration, and eventually to North Dakota. Today, as NDIT’s #Broadband Program Director, Brian is helping #NorthDakota race toward becoming the first state in the nation to reach 100% high-speed broadband coverage. Quentin Brien has always liked building things, especially when what he creates can make someone else’s life a little better. Exciting news! North Dakota is leading the way in another emerging frontier: enterprise AI adoption.   According to Microsoft, our state now has the highest active-use rate of Microsoft Copilot among state governments in the country, and our teams are putting that technology to work for North Dakotans every day.   Across state government, nearly 3,000 team members use Copilot each month to make everyday work a little easier—from summarizing meetings and analyzing documents to finding information faster and reducing repetitive tasks. The result is more time to respond to citizens, move projects forward, and focus on the work that matters most.   For us, that’s what AI adoption is really about. Cybersecurity is strongest when we stand together.   We were proud to have Cyber Operations Director John Rodenbiker, Principal Cybersecurity Analyst Jon Heard, and Senior Threat Intelligence Analyst Ariel Jablonow join cybersecurity professionals from across government, the military, law enforcement, critical infrastructure, and private industry at the inaugural North Dakota Cyber Intelligence & Operations Summit.   Events like this showcase what makes North Dakota's cybersecurity community so strong: collaboration. Ariel also shared how NDIT partners with the North Dakota State and Local Intelligence Center (NDSLIC) to strengthen information sharing, coordinate resources, and help protect the systems and services North Dakotans rely on every day.   Thank you to everyone who helped make the summit a success.
