  • Michigan State University has received a $30 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish Transformative Explorations in Multi-Physics and Engineering of Scientific Turbulence, or TEMPEST, a new Science and Technology Center focused on one of science’s most difficult problems: understanding and controlling turbulence. TEMPEST will bring together physicists, mathematicians, engineers and AI researchers from MSU and partner institutions, combining theory, computation, artificial intelligence techniques and experimentation to build trustworthy predictive models of real-world turbulence for high-consequence applications. Researchers in the MSU College of Engineering will focus on applications for energy, transportation, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. “Engineering is ultimately about understanding the world well enough to design something better, and turbulence is at the heart of many of the systems engineers work to design and develop,” said John Papapolymerou, dean of the College of Engineering.   • More than 70 Spartans. More than 60 technical presentations. Research, design and robotics recognition on a national stage. Faculty and students from Michigan State University’s Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering showcased the breadth of Spartan expertise at the 2026 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Annual International Meeting in Indianapolis. Highlights included: • Third place for a Biosystems Engineering senior design team in the ASABE Gunlogson Environmental Design Competition • Fifth place among 15 teams for the MSU BAE Ag Robotics Team • Third place for Macy Schafer in the Boyd-Scott M.S. Research Competition • A Graduate Scholarly Achievement Award for doctoral candidate Boyang Deng • Faculty honors for Ehsan Ghane and Yuzhen Lu Spartans also contributed more than 60 technical presentations and served in leadership roles throughout the meeting. From July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, corporations, foundations and organizations from 44 states and six countries came together to support the Michigan State University College of Engineering. Their generosity is advancing student success, academic programs, faculty, research, facilities and the future Leinweber Center for Engineering and Digital Innovation. Among those supporters were 257 first-time donors, 153 corporations, foundations and organizations, 22 donors who have given for 30 consecutive years and Ceo Bauer, a 1949 civil engineering graduate who marked his 75th consecutive year of giving.   • More than 200 leaders from research, industry, government and entrepreneurship came together at Michigan State University to explore what comes next for Michigan’s mobility economy. At the 2026 Mobility Summit, Spartan Engineering faculty, researchers and student teams helped lead conversations spanning autonomous vehicles, batteries, infrastructure, drones, artificial intelligence, advanced air mobility, defense innovation and global competition. College of Engineering researchers also showcased technologies ready for industry engagement, while student teams demonstrated how experiential learning is helping prepare the next generation of mobility innovators. “Engineering is at the heart of so much of the innovation happening in mobility,” said Judd Herzer, director of mobility research and innovation at MSU.   • Throwback Thursday: The people behind MSU’s first computer Long before laptops, smartphones and artificial intelligence, Spartans were helping build MSU’s earliest computing technology. Elizabeth Unger, Martin Hawley and John Forsyth were part of the team that helped build MISTIC, MSU’s first computer. The pioneering machine had about 1,000 memory locations and a 1K capacity, a striking contrast to the computing power available today. Their careers continued that legacy of innovation. Unger went on to serve as a computer science professor, dean and vice provost for technology at Kansas State University. Hawley became a professor and chair of MSU’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and later director of the MSU Composite Vehicle Research Center. Forsyth began teaching computer science at MSU in 1965 and retired in 1992. Years later, the three reunited at an Engineering alumni reception during MSU Grandparents University, bringing together three people who helped shape an early chapter of computing at Michigan State.   • Incoming Spartan Engineers are getting a head start before their first semester even begins. Twenty-six students participated in the 2026 Engineering and Science Success Academy, or ESSA, a four-week residential program designed to help incoming students strengthen academic skills, build community and prepare for college life. On average, 80% of ESSA participants increased their math placement scores and moved into higher-level prerequisite courses. Some placed directly into Calculus I or higher. For nearly 20 years, ESSA has helped students arrive at MSU with greater confidence, stronger connections and a better understanding of the resources available to support their success.
