You might not expect a pelvic health PT to have opinions about breast pumps…but you know me: I have opinions on all things female health 🤓 In my clinical life as a pelvic physical therapist, I work with postpartum clients as whole people: I pay attention to how every activity they do, including pumping, affects their musculoskeletal system. Momcozy recently sent me their Wellness One pump to test and review (alongside my fabulous, multihyphenate colleague Brittany Dowell). This #FemaleHealthFriday 🎉 I’m sharing what I look for in pumps for my own patients. 🚶♀️Portability matters more than you might think🚶🏽♀️ A wearable pump means you're not tethered to a wall, which keeps you moving throughout the day. Prolonged sitting is hard on the lower back and hips for anyone, and postpartum bodies are no exception. Being able to stand, walk, and move while pumping is a real ergonomic advantage. ⚖️ Pump weight and positioning affect your upper body ⚖️ Heavier pumps, and those that plug into the wall, tend to pull your upper trunk forward, contributing to rounded shoulders and forward head posture. I liked that the Wellness One is lightweight enough to fit into a pumping bra without creating significant forward load on the neck and upper back. 🤚🏽 Ease of assembly protects your hands and wrists🤚🏽 Wrist and hand pain are quite common postpartum, and wrestling with pump components multiple times a day can add up to increased discomfort. The simpler the assembly, the kinder it is to your joints. 🤱🏽 Assistive lactation features can help🤱🏽 This pump model includes a massage function and gentle warming, both of which can support milk letdown. The warming feature is mild and very comfortable, though it's not appropriate if you’re dealing with a breast infection: as always, check with your provider first. Postpartum recovery doesn't stop at your pelvic floor. Your upper back, neck, wrists, and posture all need attention too. Choosing tools that support your whole body is part of the healing process.
