  • Care Team Member Spotlight! Doreen, Registered Nurse – MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital Gastroenterology “My journey with Pen Bay Gastroenterology started with a big decision. Having grown up and raised a family of my own in Massachusetts, my roots had been firmly planted. However, I knew that making the move to Maine meant starting a new and exciting chapter in my life. Thus, finding a workplace that would help me feel connected to my new community was very important to me. Even more importantly, finding a group of people who shared my passion for delivering high-quality patient care with grace and compassion. After doing some research I felt that Pen Bay Gastroenterology would be the best fit for me both professionally and personally. Now, after two years of employment, I can say with certainty that my assumption couldn’t have been truer. The dedication and commitment to quality patient care within the Pen Bay GI department is not only admirable but a blessing to be a part of. What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to connect with patients during the sometimes difficult or unnerving lead up to a procedure. Having the opportunity to reach out to them, answer their questions, and ease any uncertainties they may have is incredibly rewarding.” Thank you, Doreen! We are so happy to hear that you are flourishing in your career and have found a supportive community in Midcoast Maine. • Care Team Spotlight! MaineHealth Maternal Fetal Medicine Ultrasound We recently heard from Madi, Claudia, Meghan and Maeve - our team of Sonographers working at MaineHealth MFM in Portland! “The best part about this department is the teamwork that takes place,” said Meghan, who has been working as a Sonographer at MaineHealth for 6 months.  “It is amazing the way the sonographers, physicians, nurses, and genetic counselors all collaborate to provide the best patient care experience for our patients. I would encourage anyone who has a passion for OBGYN sonography to join our team. We have a wonderful welcoming group here who is more than willing to teach and learn from one another.” Madi, who has been working as a Sonographer at MaineHealth for 8 months said, “I first learned about my current position during my clinical rotations in ultrasound school. The thing I enjoy most about my role is being a part of patients' care teams in their most difficult or vulnerable moments. The trust patients place in our imaging is an honor. And I also love getting to share exciting news like twins or fetal sex.” Maeve is a new graduate who just joined the team in June! “I grew up in Maine and always knew I wanted to return after college. Once I learned more about the positive work environment and met the incredible staff, I knew this was where I was meant to be. As a new grad, I have had a wonderful experience here so far. The support, teamwork and opportunities to learn have made it a great place to start my career!” “I was a student at in this department and fell in love with the work and environment, which helped me choose to work in OB/GYN and stay on as an employee once I graduated”, said Claudia, who has been with the team since December 2025. “A typical day at work for me is busy but not overwhelming. I start at 7am and see my last patient at 4pm. In the time frame I see many patients, but also have time to review cases and have moments to reflect which is essential to a healthy workday.” Interested in joining this incredible and dedicated care team? • Recently, MaineHealth held its first AI Innovation Hackathon. Hosted by CEO, Andy Mueller. This one-day, hands-on event gave care team members the opportunity to work on real workflow challenges and build simple, working prototypes using existing tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot and Power Automate. There were 68 participants that made up 13 teams at the event. It was open to individuals and teams who want to improve how work gets done by reducing manual steps, rework, follow ups, and time spent searching for information. Solutions must be non-clinical, non-EHR, non-PHI, and small enough to prototype in one day. By the end of the day, selected participants had the opportunity to create a working prototype, clear documentation, and feedback to help move strong ideas forward. Thanks to all who participated and congratulations to the four winning teams: Category: Clinical & Care Team Winning Concept: Time Away & Schedule Management Aide Category: Revenue, Billing, & Finance Winning Concept: Automated Audit Prioritization Category: Workflow & Team Productivity Winning Concept: Streamlining the RFP Process Through Automation Category: Digital Platforms & Enablement Winning Concept: Replacing SmartSheets Using MS365

  • As reported last week by WMTW-TV, new research funded by the National Institutes of Health could help answer important questions about how exposure to so-called forever chemicals could affect the long-term health of children. MaineHealth pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Abby Fleisch has received a grant from the NIH to study whether exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) early in life could increase a person's risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. According to Dr. Fleisch, "Children tend to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental exposure because their bodies are still growing and developing," See more of this story and interview with Dr. Fleisch: https://bit.ly/4faIu7Z
