Athens to Los Angeles. The Olympics' birthplace meeting its next home. A historic moment for Greek sport: Dean Spanos, the only Greek-American owner of an NFL franchise and Chairman and controlling owner of the Los Angeles Chargers, met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his team with the presence of representatives from the U.S. Embassy to Greece, to discuss the NFL's global expansion and Greece's role in it. And it wasn't a one-off visit. A series of follow-up meetings have been held over the past days — with the active support of the Prime Minister and his team — to align stakeholders, define next steps and move things fast on Greece's positioning within the global NFL ecosystem. At the heart of the conversation: flag football, the new Olympic sport that makes its debut at LA 2028. Because beneath the diplomacy lies something far more powerful — a story written across two cities, two histories, and one flame that has never really gone out. ▪️ Greece — where the Olympic flame was first lit. ▪️ Los Angeles — where, in 2028, that same flame comes home. A sport that is becoming Olympic, carried by a franchise with Greek heritage, supported at the highest level of the Greek state. Two cities, separated by an ocean — bound by the same flame, and the same belief: that sport is identity, community and culture. In that spirit, plans are taking shape for a Chargers presence in Greece in 2027 — one year out from LA 2028 — to bring American football closer to Greek athletes, coaches and the next generation. The bigger picture: 2026 is a record-breaking year for the NFL internationally, with 9 regular-season games played outside the United States — in London, Madrid, Dublin, Berlin, Paris and Munich. The league is no longer "going global." It is global. Greece's place in that story is being written right now.
