In 1973, she defeated Bobby Riggs in the historic Battle of the Sexes, a cultural moment that transcended tennis and sparked a global conversation about gender equality. She didn't stop there.   • It’s easy to think of segregation as something from a distant past but 𝑪𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒍 𝑱. 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒎𝒔 was only 18 when he and a friend stopped at a service station in South Carolina in 1956 where he took a drink from a “Whites Only” water fountain simply because there was no other option. What might have seemed like a mundane choice at the time became one of the most enduring images of everyday resistance against Jim Crow. Today, Williams is still alive and active in telling these stories. He opened the 𝑪𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒍 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒂 𝑪𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍 𝑹𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒎, preserving not just images but the memory of #FearlesslyAuthentic people whose courage moved history forward.     This photo was taken recently. Not in 1966. Earlier this month, 𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 (D-Memphis) and fellow lawmakers were denied entry by the Sergeant at Arms to a special session at the Cordell Hull State Office Building in Nashville, Tennessee. We talk a lot about who gets a seat at the table. This is what it looks like when the door is blocked entirely. Representation isn't symbolic, it is structural. And when elected officials are turned away from the rooms where decisions are made, the rest of us should be paying attention.
