ITN’s Head of Legal and Compliance, John Battle KC (Hon.) opened this year's Society of Editors #MediaFreedom conference launching a new Policing and Media Charter for England and Wales with Rebecca Camber, Crime & Security Editor of the Daily Mail and Chair of the Crime Reporters Association. The Charter, the result of two years negotiation between police and media representatives, introduces for the first time, a clear written framework for how police and media work together - outlining what information can be shared, when, and with whom. The police have also updated their own internal media guidelines, including an expectation that all police forces in England and Wales respond to journalists’ calls. The Charter was developed between the National Police Chiefs' Council, College of Policing, Crown Prosecution Service, the Society of Editors, Crime Reporters Association, Media Lawyers Association and other media representatives.
