Updates

  • Interoperability was at the center of today’s panel, “From Zurich Across Europe: A Global Perspective on U‑space Implementation” at XPONENTIAL Europe. Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA's U-space field test in Zurich showed the value of structured onboarding and test phases,” backed by automated validation. Over two months, the program achieved a level of verification that would not be feasible manually: extensive test sessions, automated checks, and a repeatable approach to confirming compliance and interoperability as systems evolve. As more authorities pursue interoperable onboarding, the need for a shared, continuously improving baseline becomes unavoidable. This is where InterUSS Automated Testing can be of great help to achieve fast, automated, and scalable onboarding processes. Thank you to all the panelists for sharing lessons learned and insights from across Europe and the US: 🔹Michael B., CEO, Orbitalize  🔹Amanda Boekholt, Head of Technology & Innovation, Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA  🔹Reinaldo Negron, Head of UTM, Wing  🔹Stéphane Vaubourg, Senior Expert U‑space, EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency  🔹Andrew Hately, UTM Concept Expert, EUROCONTROL    These exchanges are essential as we work toward a robust, multi‑vendor ecosystem and a faster approach to uncrewed operations.

  • Tomorrow at XPONENTIAL Europe join the panel “From Zurich Across Europe: A Global Perspective on U‑space Implementation,” featuring InterUSS Platform members, technical leaders, and key voices of the Advisory Council. Building on the milestone achieved in Zurich, where the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA introduced automated verification to support service‑provider certification, the discussion will consider how to extend these advances across Europe. On stage: 🔹Michael B., CEO, Orbitalize  🔹Amanda Boekholt, Head of Technology & Innovation, Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA  🔹Reinaldo Negron, Head of UTM, Wing  🔹Stéphane Vaubourg, Senior Expert U‑space, EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency    Moderated by Andrew Hately, UTM Concept Expert at EUROCONTROL the panel will address the transition to a resilient, multi‑vendor ecosystem, how the sector can progress towards safe, scalable, and widely adopted U‑space operations, and where InterUSS Automated Testing can support compliance and interoperability. • 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐕𝐋𝐎𝐒 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐔-𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞. We have just wrapped up the InterUSS Platform Workshop in Düsseldorf! Industry, regulators, standards development organizations, and authorities gathered to share real-world lessons from U-space deployments and discuss the future of industry collaboration. 5 key takeaways: 🔹 Current use of automated testing for soft launch of U-space: Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA and HHLA Sky GmbH shared some learnings from implementing the U-space soft launch. InterUSS is constantly evolving its roadmap based on these real-world deployments. 🔹 Cost risk of fragmentation: Implementers noted that the lack of harmonization and reliance on manual processes would make U-space implementation costly and time-consuming. Contributing to and onboarding with Automated Testing enables faster, more economical rollouts. 🔹 Shared baseline: Governance and open-source resources provide a common foundation for all stakeholders. Setting up these structures is an initial effort that can scale, as seen with the growth of the US UTM Implementation. 🔹 Constant iteration is the present and the future: Unlike traditional Air Traffic Management, where software is frozen post-approval, the soft launch participants moved quickly to fix bugs, push updates, and run automated tests. This adaptability is a key advantage. 🔹 Implementation delivers knowledge: Roundtable participants agreed that many hurdles and manual tasks only become clear during actual implementation. Automated Testing and ongoing input from the ecosystem support a digital, iterative process provided by The Linux Foundation project. • Great discussions today in Düsseldorf at the InterUSS Advisory Council session, together with regulators and authorities. The session focused on exploring government implementations and the evolution of different CAAs' roadmaps, while also creating a forum for constructive exchanges on interoperability, oversight models, and harmonization needs. Highlights from the discussions include: 🔹Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA shared insights from their newly published Field Test v1, emphasising the successful use and importance of Automated Testing and governance frameworks, as well as upcoming milestones on onboarding and expanded U‑space services. 🔹Federal Aviation Administration presented the current scale of UTM implementation across the United States, showcasing accepted and potential service providers across the country and the rollout of strategic coordination services spanning multiple states. 🔹The Dutch Civil Aviation Authority provided updates on their phased pre‑U‑space approach, outlining next steps as they move towards future implementation. The InterUSS Advisory Council continues to play a key role in exploring CAAs' priorities for U-space and UTM implementation, identifying regulatory gaps, providing directional input on InterUSS activities, and exchanging real-world use of InterUSS tools. We are grateful to all authorities and organizations participating in this collaborative effort to advance safe and interoperable UTM/U‑space ecosystems 🤝 Stay tuned for the updates on the next session!

  • Switzerland will introduce its first U‑space airspace in the Zurich region, with full implementation planned for the end of 2026 🇨🇭 InterUSS Associate Member Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA is coordinating a phased rollout to ensure the safe management of increased drone operations in the Zurich airspace region, with U‑space services supporting drone pilots in their operation. Zurich’s U‑space marks an important milestone for the future of drone operations in Switzerland, and a key reference point for U‑space deployment across Europe. 🔗 Learn more and follow the latest updates via FOCA: https://lnkd.in/dEN5bDNS

In December 2024, the Federal Council emphasised the need for a digital U-space infrastructure to ensure the high safety level of the Swiss aviation system in the context of increasing drone traffic. In November 2025, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), together with U-space service providers and drone operators, coordinated the first phase of Switzerland’s U-space implementation through a U-space field test. The test assessed the technical and operational maturity and interoperability of U-space services. The findings support the next steps of U-space development and implementation in Switzerland.
